nForce or Tiger MP?

Well, I think the title says it all. I'm currently running with a P2 400, and I decided it's time to wake up and smell a fast comp again. What I can't really decide is if it's worth the extra money to run smp and get 2 1.2 Palys. What do you guys honestly recommend?

I don't play games too much, but Wolf looks pretty promising. I would run Win2k or XP, and I actually used CAD once in a while (Abaqus, ProE). Barring multithreaded apps, what kind of performance gain would I get from running 2 1.2s vs. a 1.4 (or waiting for the new paly). I'm in no hurry to get a new system, but it seems like the time is approaching for a new toy. I'll spend 600 max for MB,CPU, Memory.

Give me any and all suggestions you have for setups, I'm still considering diff. configs.

You guys are awesome,

Graham

You might want to go single Palomino and Nforce since you'll probaly not going to get a lot of use from the dual config! I still like the dual Athlon setup on a tiger and if you got the money go for it. You dont need the pally to dco a dual config. Tbird will do just fine!

Go dual if you can, it seems that everyone that goes MP NEVER wants to go back! I would if I wasn't poor, I'd say definitely tiger mp. Even 1Ghz Tbirds on a tiger mp would be nicer than a single 1.4 Tbird, at least IMO

I'm going to go Dual MP as soon as some other boards come out and the price goes down :)

I just upgraded from a P2 400 to an Athlon 1.4Ghz a month ago. I don't think that a dual processor system would be cost effective in terms of performance. You would probably get more utility by spending the money you would have spent on a dual processor system on a faster CDRW, for example.

So if I do go with the Tiger, where should I buy my stuff? And what Heat sinks should I get?

I'm new to AMD.

None really. In fact a single 1.4Ghz would be faster for anything that isn't multi threaded.

Personally i'd hang back until some KT266a and nForce boards have hit the street. It looks like you have use for SMP but i don't know if it would be worth shelling out the $$ over a high spec single Athlon system on one of the boards using a new chipset( nForce/KT266a).

Also, Northwood P4s aren't too far away. It won't be cheap but might be worth a look
