nForce Dolby Digital Encoding Useful?

What is this feature useful for? Games and movies that support Dolby Digital only need to be decoded. So what can use this feature? Is it just to turn stereo or four channel signals into 5.1 signals? I was just wondering because I read the Audigy review and it doesn't support it, while some of the nForce sound solutions do.
