nForce and Penryn?

What are the rumers flying around these days? I did just buy me an nForce 650i motherboard and I was wondering if there was any speculation either way whether this will run Penryn or Yorksfield? What about the current crop of 680i boards? It seems as if nvidia might be cool about a BIOS upgrade, they're not the Intel giant (leaving 925/955/975 owners stranded).

It's impossible to know. Probably going to need a new vrm like conroe did, so it's impossible to know if the boards will be able to support them until they are released.

I highly doubt the 650 will be able to support it.

Thats even if it doesnt require DDR3 ram.


Ultimate safe board would be the P35 bearlake. Im about 75% sure it should work with penryn.

While I don't know for sure, I don't think 680i will properly support (without mods, etc.) Penryn. Even if it does, the support will be minimal. (OC'ing and all) What's the worry with Penryn, though? They're still 6 months later and you can buy a 650i Ultra that almost equals to 680i (sans SLI) for $90. There will be better, cheaper boards by the time Penryn is readily available and affordable.

im almost 100% my Striker will support it with a bios flash and its using the 680i. Been reading all about it and im hopeing im not misenterpreting the info im finding.

Don't forget VRM's. Penryn may require "different" power levels and no amount of bios flashing will fix that. I have the 650i, but nowhere near concerned if it supports Penryn or not. That is waaaay down the line yet. At least mine will support quad core (Kentsfield) and 1333 fsb. Happy with that.

There's no technical reason why the 650i would not support it and the 680i would. Also, Penryn does not have an IMC and does not have to use a specific RAm type.

Chances are pretty good that the P35 boards will get Penryn support via BIOS updates as they do have the proper VRN revision IIRC.
