My brothers old 939 rig just died, and he wants to get a intel quad.

I've used nforce boards in the past, but it's been a while. Right now I prefer intel chip sets, but he will be reusing a 9600gt and wants the option of running 2 in sli...he's also on a budget.

He's planning on reusing the following components: 2 WD Raptor 150's, ide dvd burner, 600watt Seasonic psu, his copy of Vista 64bit, and like I mentioned before a 9600gt.

What he'll be purchasing: 2x2gb kit of ddr2(possibly 1066), mobo, and cpu.

My question is, does anyone here have personal experience with this chipset? How well do they overclock? I've seen some complaints about these boards not being stable with 2x2gb memory. Also I'm not sure which quad he's going to get.

Any advice or board recommendations is appreciated, thanks.

Another question, is sli even worth the it? I've seen some bad ass benchmarks with 2 9600gt's in sli, but from what I've read not every game supports it. Also forgot to mention he has a 19" wide screen monitor, so would he even see the benefits of sli at 1440x900(keeping in mind he might upgrade to a larger monitor later on).

Right now he's playing cod4, flight sim x, company of heroes, and bf2142. Future games he'll be playing, Mass Effect, HL2:ep3, Crysis, GRID, and maybe Age of Conan.

thanks

No, generally speaking SLI is not worth it unless you are planning to play the games at 1920x1200 and beyond.

I will probably never use it on my MB, but otherwise my P5N-E SLI is a solid MB that I've been using since January 2007.

Yeah, I've always liked the idea of using one powerful card instead of 2 budget cards, and it's not something I'd use. I guess I'll ask him how intent he is on actually utilizing sli, if he never plans on using 2 cards I might see if I can persuade him to wait for intel's p45 chip set coming out next month, or some other option...if he can wait that long.

Looking at the thread you linked, plus some newegg reviews of the msi and asus board, there seems to be mixed results.

Anyways thanks for the replies JustaGeek.
