I got that e-mail also. I think I'm going to wait for the MSI board though. I haven't seen any reviews of the Chaintech board but the MSI looks good.

After looking at the specs of the Chaintech board, it looks like it uses the nForce3-250 chipset instead of the nForce3-250Gb like the MSI has. The Chaintech has on-board Gigabit Ethernet; the MSI has on-chip Gigabit Ethernet. So the MSI will have the hardware firewall as well as other features that the Chaintech won't have. I'm gonna wait for the MSI, too.

But when will the MSI board hit the shelves?!

According to MSI's website it just says available May '04. How's that for vague?

Less features than the ZNF3-250, but it's only $99.

Has the same nForce3-250 chipset, but...
5.1 channel onboard sound, vs. 7.1
No Gigabit LAN
No SATA RAID 0+1

Not sure what else it doesn't have compared to the ZNF3-250, but it is only $99.

I need SATA RAID and I would like Gigabit LAN. I like the on chip firewall on the MSI board so I think I will wait for that to hit the store shelves.

The Chaintech VNF3-250 DOES have SATA RAID:

CHAINTECH NVIDIA nForce3 250 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 Athlon 64 CPU, Model "VNF3-250" -RETAIL

Model# VNF3-250
Item # N82E16813152043

Specifications:
Supported CPU: Supports the new generation of AMD Socket754 Athlon 64 CPU
Chipset:NVIDIA nForce3 250
RAM: 3x DIMM for DDR266/333/400 Max 2GB
IDE: 2x UltraDMA 133 up to 4 devices
Slots: 1x AGP 8X/4X, 5x PC, 1x CNRI
Ports: 2xPS/2,2xCOM,1xLPT,1xLAN,4xUSB2.0,Audio Ports
Onboard Audio: 5.1 Channel AC'97 2
Onboard LAN: On-board LAN controller RTL8100C 10/100Mb
Onboard SATA: 2x SATA 150, RAID 0/1
Form Factor: ATX

At $79 all you are missing is a couple of minor features of the NForce 250 chipset. You still get the two big features: Full HT performance and AGP/PCI locks.

I think I am personally going to take the plunge into Athlon64 with this board. At $79 I can get it, build my system and then if a really kick butt board by Abit or Asus comes out in the next few months I can pick that up. Also, the Via K8T800 Pro (working AGP/PCI locks and better performance) is supposed to be out in the near future. I think I am going to get this puppy so I can have Athlon64 goodness now and then just treat it as disposable... :D

Well, I decided to go ahead and order one too. Really can't beat the price / features. Hope it doesn't turn out to be a lemon.

I bought the Chaintech VNF3-250 along with the components for my first Athlon64 system last night. Can't wait to get the parts (looks like I will get them Monday) and I will report back here with my impressions of the board.

It's sold out now (or else they never really had it in stock). Chaintech's Nforce 3 150 board was one of the few Athlon 64 boards that could take any kind of RAM Tom's threw at it in testing without errors, so these new ones SHOULD be good.

I believe memory stability is one of the major reasons to go with a 250gb motherboard. I was under the impression that the first gen A64 motherboards had problems with memory if you used more than 1 stick, but that the MSI board (and presumably the other 250gb boards) do not have this issue.

Let me know if you have other data.

Well, I ordered the Chaintech board tonight from Newegg. This is the top of the line model though. If I have any problems at all with it I'm going to RMA it and buy the MSI board. I'll be selling the ASUS board I currently have on e-bay I guess...maybe I'll give the for sale forum here a try first though. Really the only problem I've had with the ASUS has been with RAID. Otherwise it has been okay.

I'm using two sticks of Corsair XMS 3200C2 on my K8V Deluxe without problems, but it was purchased only as a benchwarmer until nF3 250Gb came out anyway. :) Gimme that Hypertransport-based gigaLAN, baby! :D

Yeah... I hope the memory problems are solved. I bought 2x512 Geil Golden Dragon PC4000 to go with my new system and I hope that the Chaintech board won't have any problems with it....

I purchased one from newegg as well yesterday...hopefully I will get my tracking number tonight and my board Monday...or Tuesday. I wished it had firewire but CRAP it is only 80 bucks. Hopefully it will go to 250 FSB...that is my big concern that it comes with NO overclocking features...that would suck.

If anyone gets their ... give us an update

I'm temped to go with the MSI board, but I have had such HORRIBLE luck with MSI in the past, theres a reason they are first to market. The last three boards I've gotten from them came in such horrible shape, I remember one of them they actuallyshipped a bunch of engineering samples as retail boards, I was unlucky enough to get one, there was about a BIOS revisions a week until finally they just stopped working on the board alltogether....horrible, horrible experience with them....guess I will have to wait for Asus to come out with one since it doesnt look like Abit plans on making one (at least not soon).
