NFO? Newsgroup? What is this?

I have seen and heard of NFO newsgroup info? What is an NFO and how does it work? I'm lost here?

it's just a file containing information about whatever is posted. you open it in a text editor.

windows tried to be smart with XP and make it a "system information file"

just open it with notepad and tell windows to always open it with notepad
