It is fair. How many punts during regulation did each team have? You have 60 minutes of regulation time to decide a game. If you lose the coin toss in OT, hope your special teams get the tackle and your defense makes them punt. You made them punt throughout regulation why should it be harder during OT?

What happens in regulation time is not relevant to whether the NFL overtime rules are fair.

If you lose the coin toss in OT, hope your special teams get the tackle and your defense makes them punt. You made them punt throughout regulation why should it be harder during OT?

Assuming it's not harder, does that necessarily make it fair? Even if you force the other team to punt on half of their possessions, that's still a 50% chance of not ever getting a chance for your offense to play. We know it's a fact that the team that wins the coin toss wins more often than they lose; how is that desirable? Wouldn't a fair overtime system give both teams an equal chance to win?

Yeah, I don't know why since it was 2 on 1. Maybe he was thinking don't fuck up and fumble it and didn't know how close the guy behind him was? Doesn't matter now. Was a good game though, a bit sloppy for both teams, but pretty much had everything you want in a game.

You have 60 minutes to decide a game. Don't complain when your team loses a coin toss. 50% chance to win the toss. If you don't like the rules then win in regulation. At least college did one thing right and got rid of ties.

56% (that's what was stated in this thread) chance to win the game when you win the toss. Wow, horrible chances. Is there any study done on who wins the game in regulation about the team that gets kicked to first? I would like to see a study on that. What if that is 56% also? Are people going to complain then about the visiting team getting to call heads or tails on the coin toss?

What about teams that are kicked to first scoring off the first possession and at the end of the half without the other team getting an equal amount of possessions in that half? Are we going to complain about that? Theoretically, since the other team gets the ball at the start of the second half they could have one more possession in the second half and equal it up, where is the study on that?

So, going with the logic in giving both sides a chance in OT, the same should be said for regulation but we can break it down and put it per half. Would you like to make it per quarter also? Make sure we get an equal amount of possessions per team then everything will be fine.

I'm a big Saints fan too. We'll see if they're for real or not next week. They don't have to win, they just have to play well.

All of the stuff you said about who receives first in regulation is irrelevant because as you said, each team gets to choose whether to kick or receive at the beginning of one half. They both have the same opportunity. That is not the case in OT.

He said 56% was the percentage since they started having sudden death OT. The percentage has been higher since the kickoff was moved back to the 30 yard line. About 5% of games are still tied at the end of OT, so out of all of the games that are won in OT it's about a 60/40 split in favor of the team that won the coin toss.

To say that a team should just win in regulation if they don't want it to come down to a coin toss is just silly. Both teams could have won in regulation, both teams failed to do so, so why does one deserve to be given an advantage in OT? Wouldn't it be preferable to have an OT system that is unbiased? I don't understand why you are so opposed to having an OT system that is unbiased.

but there is no OT system that would be totally unbiased.

if both teams get a chance, the team that has the ball second has the advantage of knowing exactly how many points they need to extend or win the game.
 
The Bengals beat the Steelers and Ravens twice... but can't beat the Raiders. 🙁

I sure hope we can get past Cleveland next week.
 
the NFL OT system has no bias. you get to play special teams and either OFF or DEF. not like the bullshit with the college system where you can kick a FG on first down cause they spot the damn ball there.
