NFL - Steelers the best 2-6 team of all time?

I've been thinking since Pitt lost yesterday that they must be the best 2-6 team in the history of the NFL. Which isn't saying much. Especially since it's not exactly very arguable, who pays much attention to 2-6 teams in the past?

I'm not a big Steeler fan or anything, but they are better than their record shows. If you were watching the game yesterday they showed a graphic showing that the Steelers this year are better statistically than they were last year. I think they are 2-6 because of Big Ben playing bad, and just playing when he shouldn't have (which falls on the coaches). They have a good backup QB in Charlie Batch, but they started Roethlisberger when he wasn't ready more than once. Also in regards to Coaching, they are making Ben throw way too much and not running enough. Don't they remember that they won last year by running the ball and throwing 20 passes a game? I don't know why they're making Ben throw the ball up 54 times in a game and only hand off the ball to Willie Parker 14 times. What are they thinking?

I'm not saying they don't deserve to be 2-6, but I still consider them a top 10 team (or close to it). They could beat any team in the NFL without getting lucky.

Anyhow, that's what's been on my mind since they lost yesterday, to a good Denver team.

I actually made the same statement yesterday, that they are probably the best 2-5 team ever. And I also said that hardly matters. Do you think Parker is a back capable of rushing effectively 30 times a game? I'm not sure. Maybe that is contributing to Big Ben's high attempt numbers, plus the fact that they always seem to be trying to come from behind. Do you think it has anything to do with their D not coming up with so many big turnovers? It seemed like Polamolou was coming up with one in nearly every big situation last year, but has yet to really come through since the first game of the season. I'm guessing these are some of the questions they are asking in the coaching meetings too.

Steelers are terrible. Big Ben is having a horrible year. At best they're not one of the 10 worst in the league.

They lost to the Raiders. If you lose to the Raiders you should be banned from the league.

They're 2-6. Don't remind me.

During yesterday's game they showed a list of rank comparisons (pass offense, rush offense, defense, etc.) between Steelers 2005 and Steelers 2006, and the 06 Steelers crushed the 05 Steelers in every aspect of those rankings with not a single number slipping below 7th in the league. On paper, the Steelers should be one of the best teams in the league if you hide the turnovers. They're sloppy in every aspect of play and end up just throwing points at their opponents.

Ugh.. it's so frustrating to watch them anymore.

"They're the best 2-6 team ever" is how fans of bad teams console/pacify themselves to avoid the reality of the situation.

Let's face it, the Steelers are having a terrible season. They lost to the RAIDERS for crying out loud.

if by 2-5 you mean 2-6 and by best you mean average, then yes

Big Ben is having a horrible year, but is it because of his injuries or is this just the type of QB he is? Remember last 2 years they relied mainly on the running game and he just had to not mess up...this year he needs to make plays and doesnt seem capable of it.

No because they will have the same record as Oakland after tonight and they lost the head-to-head. They can't be any better than 2nd best of all time.

That they have turned the ball over 24 times in 8 games. They are -11 in turnovers, which is the WORST in the NFL.

That alone tells me that they aren't a good team.. at all.

I love every bit of it. I'm sure half of the "Big Ben" bandwagon fans have jumped off. This year has proven he isn't worth a $hit as a quarterback.

Err, when your Quarterback has twice as many interceptions as touchdowns, your not going to be anywhere near a top ten team. The defense has been underachieving, and Willie Parker is not a 20+ carries guy. Amazing how human a Quarterback can look when he lacks the luxury of weapons around him he once had. (Bettis, Randal El, etc...)

Roethlisberger is overrated... Eli Manning ftw! :D

And the bears lost to the Dolphins.... Good teams aren't allowed to lose to bad teams?

EDIT: The only reason they're losing this season is because of turnovers. And you know what, turnovers are NOT a team effort. You can put those squarely on the shoulders of Ben winging passes to god knows where, and the hands (or lack thereof) of Holmes. How Holmes still has a job I have no idea...

But the Dolphins are better than their record indicates. They get caught on the short end of the stick most of the times.

The Bears were bound to lose. Grossman doesn't have it in him to be a stellar QB for 16 games.

Big Ben is history. He didn't have enough brains to protect what brains he had by wearing a helmet, and he has never been the same since the accident.

Nah, I'd say they're about equal to all the other 2-6 teams in the league. Hell, if they were in the NFC I'd say they still had a chance at the playoffs this year.

Very sad. Seriously. I like to laugh at the Raiders but damn.. this was even funnier when I saw the game.

Oh god. don't remind me. I was pissed. Then the guy who lives in the next building started screaming "FVCKING BEARS." I couldn't help but laugh and then he yelled SHUT UP. =/

2-6 huh, that's even more amazing.

No love for the Steelers though, understandable. I really think they are an above 500 team though. They could finish the year over .500 and i wouldn't be surprised. Turnovers are just killing them. Again, they deserve to be 2-6. They are a top 15 team though, in my opinon of course. I'm in Arizona, so not having an NFL team I've always had other favorite NFL teams.

I agree the steelers are the best 2-6 team ever...

however in reflection...

Its not just bens fault... in each of theri games, they had an equal number of fumbles lost as INT's ben threw. Yet they still lost close games, and were winnable in all of them but Jax.

Parker is not an every down back. He's not strong enough to run between the tackles and move piles like bettis did. in order to stop him, all you have to do is play an outside edge defense, and stop the run with your middle 4-5.

Finally the line is blocking terrible. Kendall Simmons will probably be the backup next year and Chris Keomoto(sp way off) will start. Hartings will probably retire and Okobi will be a starter.

Hopefully Santonio Holmes will pick it up next year and not play like a rookie... although he seems to have the same potential to bust like Plexiglass Burress. I'd really like to see them draft a fast QB and make him into a WR like they did with Randel El, and should have done with Stewart. Nate Washington will make an excellent 3rd/4th reciever for next year, and Willie Reid probably the 5th.

In the offseason, they will draft or sign some O-lineman and a Power RB, also their LB's are starting to get old, and they dont have any good rookies waiting to step in, they will draft a DE and convert him to an OLB.

Stupid post. "Best ever" and "2-6"....

How about "Are the Steelers the biggest dissapointment for returning SB champs?" That might be more fitting

I hate it when people say things like the Steelers should be above .500 or they are the best team to be 2-6.

The matter of the fact is that they are 2-6, and they didn't get cheated out of any of those games. They are giving the ball away like idiots, and that's part of the game. Heck, the Pats would have won yesterday if it wasn't for the stupid turnovers.

Now stop talking about how they are so talented and capable of beating every team. They are what they are, a 2-6 team who can't protect the ball.
