not true. another case of half-information. in his post game press conference, Sherman said that they didn't get a good luck in the coaches box of the replays before the next snap. he said there was a miscommunication, and he didn't mean to imply that the official told him he couldn't challenge when asked by the sideline reporter. the dipshites in the booth kept yammering on and on about it, though. much like all the idiots i argued with until midnight last night telling them the holder can't spike the ball, and you can't even do it out of the shotgun. after everyone hearing Cris Collinsdork yammer on and on about it, though, everyone acted like they thought of it. i can't believe how everyone got on the holder for not spiking it.

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Why Mike Sherman didn't challenge a crucial call in Green Bay's 27-7 playoff loss to Atlanta remains a mystery.

Sherman said he was told by an official he couldn't review the call, and referee Bernie Kukar said the Packers' coach never asked the crew about it.

"I talked to an official on the field. He led me to believe that it wouldn't be reviewable,'' Sherman said flatly.

"Nobody from this crew told him that,'' Kukar insisted.

The disputed play came in the second quarter with Green Bay trailing 14-0. Atlanta's Kevin McCadam pushed Tyrone Williams into Green Bay punt returner Eric Metcalf, and Falcons fullback George Layne recovered the muffed punt at the Packers 21.

Four plays later, the Falcons made it 21-0 when T.J. Duckett carried the pile 6 yards into the end zone as a shocked Sherman crouched on the sideline.

Had Sherman challenged the call, Green Bay would almost assuredly have gotten possession and dodged a major bullet because television replays clearly showed the punted ball clearly bounced off McCadam's left shoulder.

"The ruling was that the ball had touched the Green Bay player first and then it was recovered by Atlanta,'' Kukar said.

Kukar said a review should have been granted if Sherman wanted one.

"Yes, the touching of a kick is a reviewable situation,'' Kukar said.

Kukar said the only discussion on the field about the play was among the officials and didn't include Sherman, who never buzzed the officials or threw his red flag to signal his intention to dispute the call.

Sherman insisted a member of the officiating crew told him he couldn't challenge the call, although he couldn't remember a number or name.

Sherman is so full of it and he is trying to cover his tracks. All he needed to do was throw the flag out (which he never did) and explain to the ref that he wanted to challenge that the ball hit a Falcon first. He didn't.

No, 49ers didn't play like superbowl champs in the last 15 minutes. They played good but it was the giants D that gave the game away.

wow, all the SF fans are saying 'it doesn't matter, too late now, oh well' and yet every sports show today is talking about it. Williams is a moron though, if he wouldn't have done anything then SF would have had to kick from out of the fvcking stadium.
 
well... whoever won this game is gonna be mauled by the bucs anyway. giants just get an extra week of offseason... which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

yeah, there is nothing we can do and it is too late. But it is the center of talk. Just like when the Raiders lost on the tuck rule. Game was lost, they can't do anything. But they talked about it all the time.

well that isn't necessarily true. the last few games with brad johnson, they put up decent numbers on offense. and even if their offense can't move (which i doubt, especially against the 49er defense)... the bucs have a defense that is very capable of scoring.

This is what I'm understanding. Seubert WAS eligable. There was another ineligible reciever downfield. If Seubert was ineligible, then there cant be a pass interference call against him.
 
the lineman that everyone saw get tackled WAS eligible, there was another lineman down field who was ineligible...

It is amazing to me in this day and age of technology that the refs on the field didn't REVIEW the play, or even talk to the replay official in the booth, to make sure they got the end of the game right.

I don't particulary care for either team, but I think the Giants could have won the NFC had they won that game.

As for the fan demanding Fassel's head and Williams cut, good luck finding another team, and get real.
 
The pass was out of reach of the lineman anyways... it was over his head, pass interference shouldn't have been called anyways. Game over, go home Shockey fans.. sore losers cause you can't snap a ball!
 
There is another option that has been discussed. The holder could have rolled out of the pocket and then thrown the ball away. There is no "intentional grounding" penalty when the ballhandler is outside of the offensive tackle-to-tackle area. They guy could have moved 3 yards to his right and then just tossed the ball over the sideline. The Giants would have likely had 2-3 seconds left, enough time for another FG try. The spot would have been the exact same because it simply would have been an incomplete pass. But I wouldn't expect the holder to know this, he isn't the QB and probably doesn't ever think about that type of situation happening. Bottom line is the Giants made the wrong choice in a pressure situation.

It was a cluttered ending to an exhausting game, but the 49ers didn't apologize Monday for their victory. After all, they're still convinced that Ahmed Plummer intercepted a pass by Kerry Collins two plays before the botched field goal.

Please, that is everything that is wrong with the NFL today. Refs are a part of the game, and they have to make calls. I can't stand it when the refs intently study game film in slow motion looking for the tip of the ball to hit the ground for a split second. Make a call, and get on with the game. Football should not be decided by a man peering under a black cloth looking at a replay in 10x slow motion. Make a call and live with it. I was in favor of instant replay at first, but seeing what it has turned the game into, I hate it.

 
I'm from New York so you'd think I'd be as angry as many of those from up that way are but I watched the game too and I felt the game was over. I'm very surprised the League has come out and said what they said about Refs blowing a call. Not professional at all and they owe the Refs a big apology.
