He shouldn't be fired, but he does need serious situational retraining, and if I were him I would apologize face to face to the entire family.

If that guy's ego could be deflated to a point where he would agree to such an apology then I would have no problem with giving him another chance. From the video it just seems like this guy has waited his entire life to be able to do this to people and he loves doing it. He comes across as the kind of guy who enjoys being able to lecture people who are in no position to be able to talk back to him. (I watch Criminal Minds so I will profile him later!)

as an internet lawyer i agree that it is within the letter of the law that if he he issues such an apology... we can then grant clemency and skip the tar and feathers.

i doubt that will happen. the guy watched the video of it and said he did nothing wrong.

He is not going to apologize (well i guess will to save his job) because his ego won't let him see he did wrong.

just as it wouldnt let him see that this was a situation where you need trust someone and releaxe and not be a dick

Well, to properly profile, you would also have to have his history. That history might include some PTSD from prior service in Iraq-Military we don't know. There could be other circumstances. Not that it excuses his actions, but there might be some reasons for the break in proper character and handling of that particular situation for a police officer.

EDIT: And honestly - How is an officer supposed to know for sure that someone is dying? I am sure they hear crap like that all the time.

That was my thought too. They hear this every day. How were they supposed to know? However, after the hospital staff came out, he should have let him go. Bad judgement.

TBH I don't really want to profile the guy. I couldn't care less what circumstances in his childhood, teenage years, or early adult life led him to be such a pompous prick. Now is his chance to put all of this crap behind him and decide what kind of man he wants to be whether it's with the police or something else.

The guy basically ran from the cops.

The night my son was born I got pulled over on the way to the hospital. I pulled over right away, let the cop approach me and ask for my info. After I handed it to him I asked him if we could speed things up because my son was being born. He ran my name to make sure I wasn't a serial killer and then gave me an escort to the hospital.

Its all about how YOU react to a situation. The cop doesn't know what's going on and very easily could have charged this guy with a lot more than running a red light.

did you watch the video? im going to guess nto or you wouldnt say he ran from the cops.

Yep I did.

He didn't pull over until he got to the hospital. All I am saying is that if he had pulled over right away, he could have things a lot simpler for everyone.

The last time I got arrested I drove a good 1/2 mile before I pulled over. I wanted to finish my smoke because I knew I was going to jail. I also knew that when I did pull over I was going to probably get taken to the ground at gunpoint. I didn't get taken down but I did get to see some pretty cool guns.

You sound like an all-around dipshit. Good job sucking at life.

Agreed totally - but his overall known profile (DPD) will now be taken into consideration by IA, and he will need a spirit of total contrition and apology from both himself and his lawyer to get past this incident (IMO). Most of it, in irony given his own comments to the man in the video, will now be tuned on himself. What happens past his point largely depends on his behavior.

Sure, being humble enough to admit not-so-glorious aspects of your life on a public forum really makes you stupid... or humble.

Let's hear all your mis-dealings and your current standings and see who gets judged.

Could still be NSFW but to judge so harshly on one comment is a prick move, Mr. Bond.

Most cops are high school degenerates who never made it to a top tier college.

How can you expect them to be reasonable in a situation like this? All they know how to do is exert their power behind a badge and gun.

I really don't find this shocking at all. It's just like the cop who shoved down that bicycle rider.

Until America wakes up and changes police recruiting standards, I don't see much change for former high school graduate pigs dressed up in blue.

That's funny, I often spend my time arresting students from a top tier college. They're not nearly as smart as you seem to think.

😕

Everyone should watch the unedited video before posting their opinions. The article is no substitute.

In my opinion, the officer showed a shocking lack of compassion and discretion. I fully agree that his actions damage public trust of the police force, which should be grounds for termination.

If I make my company look bad in the public's eye, chances are that I won't be working there much longer. Private companies and police departments both need that trust to operate successfully, so the analogy should hold.

I dunno, I think the cop acted ok. If you're speeding/running red lights for any reason and don't expect to be detained for several minutes, you're insane. Only situation I could think of where a cop would just let you go would be if you had a dying person in the car or a woman giving birth.

What was stopping the officer from escorting him to the dying woman's room and detaining him there?

^exactly - at that point you know you're at a hospital for a reason and you make a judgment call - you have the other off duty cop watch the family. Take the main guy in to the front desk (or a desk with access to patient and nurses) and get verification from a nurse or head nurse then escort the whole family to the room. That's what should have happened.

CBS news ran this story tonight. Powell has apologized. I would bet his days as a cop are numbered. The bastard will get what he deserves.

My favorite part of this entire thread are the people who continue to protect the cop... when even the police chief has pretty much admitted that the guy is a douche.

How do you think police chiefs got their stars? I'm pretty sure it is not because officers in his department voted for him.

Powell screwed up so badly it made the national news and you're in here defending him.

Yes, you're a douche.

I recall saying something about Powell's attitude was shitty, did I?

And why are you defending/completely ignoring the facts that Moats ran a red light, jumped out of the vehicle, and then became agitated during a traffic stop?

AGAIN

Did you even read it?

Moats: Did I not stop at the red light?

Powell: You stopped, then you drove through the red light.

Even the cop said he stopped.
So take your "I'm a cop" bs else where as we all know you are some loser wanabe.

Cool. Next time i'll treat all red lights as a stop sign

That's cool dude as long as you're on the way to see a dying relative for the last time. Or your wife has a baby halfway poking out or something, you know, like an emergency of sorts.

and no, i would never drive through a red light because i want to see my mother-in-law one last time.

How was it urgent?
Did she all of a sudden contract cancer that morning?
Did he have the cure for cancer in the back of his truck?
Was it even his mother?
Was he a doctor?
Was she not under the care of competent medical personnel?
Are hospital parking lots good places to speed?

Are you intentionally thick? Or are you just this stupid IRL?

You're a moron. Obviously the guy stopped at the red light to make sure he wasn't going to t-bone someone's grandmother. Use logic or stop trolling because you either lack the former or are acting the part of the latter.
