Apparently it's going to come down to Adrian Peterson or Peyton Manning.
AD fell just 9 yards shy of the single season rushing record, but 2,097 yards following an ACL tear is an incredible feat nonetheless. He led his team to the playoffs with an incredible late-season push against numerous difficult teams. And he was basically the Vikings' entire offense.
Peyton Manning is Peyton Manning. Multiple neck surgeries after missing a full year of football, playing for a new team... and he finishes the season with an 11-game winning streak, the longest in the NFL this season, to capture the #1 seed. You could tell it took him a few weeks to catch his stride, but now the Broncos look unstoppable.
I admit I'm biased, but I think the award has to go to Peterson. QBs tend to win the award more often than RBs because QBs tend to be the most important player on their team. But Adrian Peterson this year was so far above everyone else in the league. I don't think any playoff team relied as heavily on any one player as the Vikings did on him.
The other ding against Manning, IMO, is his team's schedule. When you're in unquestionably the weakest division in football, it does make things a bit easier. The Chargers, Raiders, and Chiefs combined for 13 wins and 35 losses this year. That's basically 6 free wins. Not to diminish Manning's accomplishments, though. He was still really good this year.
The one argument I won't make is that Peterson should get it because Manning has already gotten the award so many times. That shouldn't factor into the decision. But I do feel that this year, although Manning played well, he wasn't head and shoulders above all other QBs as he often has been in the past.
And if you think someone else should get the award, feel free to say why!
