I think the Dallas trade will work out in the long run. They got an extra second and 5th for moving down 22 spots this year, which is very good. Julius Jones is a good all around back with some explosion. He can run inside and out, and he can also return kicks. He's a nice pickup and could turn out to be one of best 2-3 RBs in this draft. If he had played his junior year at ND (he was academically inelligible), he might have gone in the first round this year. He averages over 5 yards a carry for his career, even with ND crappy offensive line and offense the last 5 years.

Next year Dallas has 2 first rounders, which should be good for building long term depth.

I know i'm late, but WOW, How did Roy Williams go 7th?? i thought pretty much everyone put him above fitzgerald.

WTF was Arizona thinking? of course they are the cardinals after all. but still. how do you pass up on Williams?

That, and Fitzgerald had a better work ethic and was more proven. No one really knows how well Roy Williams can catch big passes because the Texas Offense never threw them. Williams is the more prototypical athlete, but Fitz had a better season last year.

in his sophomore year kiper had williams as the best college football player ever. that's gotta say something. plus, he was one of the 6 that teams had as their #1 overall pick. i've seen roy in person every game for almost 3 years now and he has proven himself. did you see him drag 5 ok state defenders 10 yards after catching a ball while double-teamed? williams is going to be a great receiver -- then again, so is fitzgerald.

Some say Dallas screwed up. But apparently they thought a 1st round pick next year, and Julius Jones, who worked out with the 'Boys last week, was a better deal than Jackson, Jones or Perry. Which I agree with, everyone should agree with. Julius Jones was the 4-5 back in the draft depending on which "expert" you believe. Most dont feel he'll be a full time starter next year. But Im betting he is.

And Dallas picked 2 OL up, so they have done what they needed to do. Granted the OL are more prospects than anything. But National Champion prospects none the less.

Being a Dallas fan myself, I agree 100%. Plus, Jones isn't a pu$$y like Hambrick is so I'd much rather see him play. Plus the OL prospects they picked up look decent.

I'm amazed Troy Hambrick runs like such a dodgy back, as he has NO ability to make people miss (he's fuggin huge).

I really hope the criticism hits home though, he could be one hell of a backup/2 team running back combo(barlow & hearst type deal). If only there was a way to inject a ray lewis type attitude........

My cowboys drafted like sh!t!!!! Why didn't they take one of the 2 best RBs in the draft, for a first rounder next year? Looks like they'll be using one of them for a RB next year :|

sd, I'm a huge Dallas fan too. I was ticked when they didn't take Jackson. Let's hope they have a genious plan in store otherwise they may get their asses wiped next year.

What a great day for a Detroit fan. We've had 3 great drafts in a row, and I'm pumped. It's not easy cheering on the Lions, but they have the front page of sportline.com and espn.com.

I watched lots of Big Twelve football last year,(husker fanatic) and two players in this draft really stood out. The first was Roy Williams, who pushes around cornerbacks and isn't arrogant, like most big name recievers. That said I would have loved to see Detroit get Fitzgerald, but I won't complain. The other player to watch out for is Tatum Bell. I was hoping the Lions would grab him in the second but they went after Jones instead. I called Denver picking him, as he's a Portis clone and Shanahan knows how to draft RBs. Watch out for Bell in the future.

Detroit's other pick in the 2nd was Teddy Lehman. For those out of the Big Twelve loop, this guy can run. He's faster than most corners, and flies toward the ball. His story starts when he was trying out for Oklahoma. He wasn't their biggest recruit, but he ran the 40 so fast they made him do it two more times, after they called over Stoops and the rest of the staff. He was a Sooner on the spot.

As a Detroit fan I'll have a few months of hope, only to have injury or incompetance ruin the season. This might be the only time of year I get bragging rights. 😉

Detroit had a monster draft. Plus, they will be getting like 5 young guys back from injury this year. They could have a very different team this year than last, and be on their way to the playoffs in 2005. I really like the job Millen and Mooch have done there so far.

Here's what ESPN is saying about the Lions. By the way, anyone have any links to draft grades on how the teams did?

Uh, no, we're not prepared yet to confer genius status on Detroit Lions president Matt Millen, because, let's be honest, you've got to win more than 10 games in three seasons to be transformed from a guy many people consider a meathead into a mastermind.

But in orchestrating a second consecutive solid draft over the weekend, Millen took yet another step toward having the imaginary dunce cap removed from his cranium, and the Lions may have taken a quantum leap toward respectability. Six choices, not exactly a bounty in terms of raw numbers, but probably three starters.

Roy Williams will give the Lions another young playmaker at receiver.
That's the quick-take analysis on the Lions' draft class and, in anyone's book, if you come out of any draft with three prospects who are going to get on the field immediately, well, you've done a pretty nice job. Sure, the fact Detroit figures to add three rookie starters to a roster that continues to get significantly greener and more Mooch-friendly, is due in part to the dubious talent pool on hand. But you keep raising the bar with a dose of fresh blood every year, suddenly the transfusions take hold, and a club is healthy again.

Over the weekend, Millen and coach Steve Mariucci added two more playmakers on the offensive side in wide receiver Roy Williams and tailback Kevin Jones. We're not as sold on Jones, who doesn't break very many tackles in the hole, as some. But after the collection of tailbacks with which the Lions lined up in 2003, the former Virginia Tech star looks like the second coming of Barry Sanders by comparison. Add Williams to last year's first-rounder, wideout Charles Rogers, who should be sound after missing all but five games in '03 because of a fractured collarbone, and that's the making of a viable tandem. And Tai Streets, signed as a free agent, is a competent No. 3 wide receiver.

It certainly improves the arsenal for third-year quarterback Joey Harrington, and, truth be told, that is Detroit's not-so-hidden agenda. Make no mistake, there are some Harrington skeptics in Motown, some of them cashing Lions paychecks, so the plan is to surround the quarterback with as much weaponry as possible. This weekend took care of a few of those spots.

The draft also added another piece to the defensive puzzle, in linebacker Teddy Lehman, who isn't quite as good as his press clippings, but who plays with the same fire Millen once exhibited. Cornerback Keith Smith from McNeese State was a mini-heist in the third round. Even the Lions' final choice of the lottery, Purdue left offensive tackle Kelly Butler, was a bargain.

OK, he was a bargain because, like the pair of underwear you just purchased at K-Mart and found to have no elastic in the band, Butler was marked "reject" by a lot of teams because of off-field issues. But the Lions, who already have a very good young left tackle in Jeff Backus, should be able to straighten Butler out and make something of a guy with second-round talent who they snatched in the sixth round.

The bottom line is that Detroit edges out Arizona, Atlanta and Oakland for the best draft. But know this: If we were doing the traditional draft report card again (and thanks, boss, for not foisting that exercise in tedium on us), there were be even fewer "A" grades than we normally distributed. It was a "C" draft for most teams, not a weekend in which many clubs distinguished themselves, not a lottery where, halfway through the fifth round, you said to yourself, "Wow, now that team is having a heck of a draft!"

I really think detroit has a chance if thier offence comes together for a wild card birth in the playoffs. this team hasn't had this many offensive weapons since the days of Sanders, Moore and Periman. Granted the running back they have now isn't even close to the same calibier as sanders, but I feel Harington has alot of potential if given the chance.

Besides Tai Streets the Lions added another corner, a safety, and a guard through free agency.

The only positional deficiency that wasn't addressed was Tight-end.

as is the case for any lions fan... or they may suck in the beginning of the season and rally to make the playoffs and bomb out of the first round, its not about how good the lions will be its how they will screw them selfs over.
