NFL changes kickoffs, replay rules

So they think having fewer kickoff returns is good? Apparently it's about player safety... Hester might as well retire now.

As first I was upset but then I remembered the Chargers losing a few games last season because of special teams so any way to make them a non-factor is a plus in my book. 😉

the kickoff spot used to be at the 40 yd line if anyone has been paying attention for the past 20 years.

I haven't followed football for that long but it used to be at the 35 anyway. Then they moved it to the 30 to get more scoring. Now they changed their minds again.

Kind of feel bad for guys like Cundiff who worked really hard to almost set the record for touchbacks.

They previously moved it to create more return opportunities without regard for safety. They have simply moved it back because of safety concerns.

Personally, though exciting, I do not like games being won or lost on special teams.

Five yards clearly means nobody will ever be able to return a kick ever again.

Season 2010
40+-yard returns 113
Touchdowns 23
Touchbacks 416

Season 1993
40+-yard returns 57
Touchdowns 4
Touchbacks 520

'94 is when the rule changed moving the kickoff from 35 to 30. So the stats are there, things will change. Now, obviously "athletic ability" has changed subjectively in that nearly 2 decade span as well, so how much will they change? I suppose we'll see, but they will.

i agree.

/recalls Desean Jackson waving the ball in the air after the Eagles came back from 21 down while I was in the fetal position.

I disagree 100%. Special teams are an integral part of the game, games are very, very often won or lost due to special teams, whether people realize it or not. Hell, take a look at that Eagles/Giants game last season, one of the most exciting/absurd comebacks of all time and without a major special teams role, it wouldn't have happened. I don't see any reason why special teams should be any less important than offense or defense.

I do not disagree that special teams can be exciting. I just don't like it when games are won or lost by special teams. I definitely understand how people would have a different view.

Do you mean won or lost by a last minute return TD or what? Field position is everything in football, teams with a fantastic punt coverage team will be a massive advantage. Special teams plays a very major role in ANY win or loss, so I'm not quite sure how you want special teams to stay out of the win or loss.

What I don't like is when you have a well-played game where both offenses and defenses are playing well and the game is won or lost because a backup linebacker (and the kicker) miss a tackle resulting in the eventual winning score.

I will admit it is hard to explain, but I know what I mean. 😉

I understand what you mean, but I suppose it's just a fundamental difference in opinion of the game. You just place a lesser importance on special teams than on offense or defense, I view them all as equally important. To me, it's just as important to have a properly recruited/trained special teams as it is O/D. Sure, a kicker won't be making the best tackles, but that's not his job, it's the job of the 10 other guys on special teams. Special teams is a lot of fun because it only works when every player is doing his job and working as a team, you can't take plays off as easily as you can in O/D.

so are you saying to basically remove punts/kickoffs and make them all just have standard spotting?

im not following what you are trying to get at either, since special teams is just as important as defense or offense.

No. It is hard to explain. I find special teams exciting, but I feel a little disappointed when a game is decided by them.

i like the replay changes at least. wish they wouldnt have a limit on correct ones though, should only 'lose' a challenge if you actually challenge and are wrong.
