I've been using the NF7-S mobo for a few years, without any problems.
A few months ago I installed a new SATA HD (WD400KD), I've been using only IDE drives before.
Things worked smoothly for a while, but then I experienced a strange anomaly- the SATA drive would suddenly disappear from the system. The Event Viewer supplied the following information:
Event #: 12
"The device <DEVICE NAME> disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal."
Sometimes it would be accompanied by the following error:
Event #:51
"An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation."
So, I figured it might be a HD hardware issue. Ran all the appropriate tests (WD HD testing software, 3rd party HD testing software)- the drive passed them without any issues. Tried different drivers, but with no success. Also tried using the drive with a different OS (Knoppix), to rule out the possibility of lousy Windows drivers, again without any success.
I started to think this might be a problem with the controller- when I would restart the computer after the drive failed, it would not show up at the SATA BIOS configuration screen. Before I got to the bottom of it, the problem suddenly stopped.
And so a few months went by, and the drive worked flawlessly. The drive was heavily used during this period. Then, a couple of months ago, the same problem reappeared. Again ran all the tests, updated the 3112's BIOS- no luck. Thought about RMA'ing the drive; Just before I did that, I connected the HD to a different computer (MSI MB w/ nVidia SATA controller)- the drive ran without any problems for days. Minutes after I connected it to the NF7-S, it failed again.
So, my current assumption is that the 3112 controller's the problem- maybe it's overheating, maybe it's just plain broke. The symptoms might imply it's an overheating problems (drive disappears randomly, sometimes after 5 minutes, sometimes after 2 hours), but I have a pretty good ventilated system (Arctic Cooling Silentium case, AMD Athlon XP 2600). Then again, didn't have the problem for most of the winter, and it reappeared when it started warming up again.
I'm currently working under the assumption it's a controller issue. Thought about getting a PCI SATA controller, but wouldn't want to spend money just to find out it doesn't work.
Any input would be highly appreciated
