737-24498: Windows Vista: Code 43 Error in Device Manager in Systems with ATI AGP Cards and Nforce3 Chipset Motherboards

The information in this article applies to the following configuration(s):

* Windows Vista 32 or 64 bit
* Catalyst Display Driver 7.1 for Vista
* Radeon® X1950 AGP series
* Radeon® X1600 AGP series
* Radeon® X1300 AGP series
* Radeon® X850 series
* Radeon® X800 series
* Radeon® X700 series
* Radeon® X600 series
* Radeon® X550 series
* Radeon® X300 series
* Radeon® 9800 series
* Radeon® 9700 series
* Radeon® 9650/9600 series
* Radeon® 9550/9500 series

Symptoms
Attempting to install the graphics driver on a system containing an NVidia NF3 chipset and an ATI AGP graphics adapter may result in the driver failing to install and the 3D engine not activating.

In Windows Vista 32bit or 64bit versions, the Device Manager will show a (!) mark and the AGP card will operate in PCI mode only. When the properties of the device are shown, the error code will show as code 43.

This issue has been seen with other AGP chipsets such as VIA and SiS but has since been resolved by chipset driver updates from these manufacturers.

AMD?s AGP adapters require correctly functioning AGP support from the operating system in order to run the WDDM driver under Vista. This WDDM driver has no way of working around the absence of AGP support.

Solution
Please contact NVidia Corp. (www.nvidia.com) for more information on this issue.
.

Looks like a nvidia problem to me.

yeah, i read lots about it already. Already upgraded to new 8800 card and a friend had a PCI express board laying around after his own upgrade.

there are no nvidia nforce3 vista drivers yet, but there are ones for nforce4 and 500 series... nvidia driver support has hit new low. What was once excellent support, it is not anymore...perhaps too many products under the belt?

fortunately there are MS drivers with vista, so this issue is only if you have dual core and nfroce3, i.e. AGP socket 939.

This isn't an Ati Issue its an NVidia issue. It only affects Dual core systems with ATi cards, but i've seen people with Nv cards getting the same issue. the only work around so far is to disable one core, which defeats the purpose of a dual core system.
Nvidia better get this fixed ASAP. I just grabbed a X1950Pro AGP for my Nforce 3, and while I can wait for vista to mature this is unacceptable. The difference between the Nforce 4 and 3 pratically nill. They need to get off there asses and fix this.

Nvidia has stated that the NF3 is EOL (end of life)product and they won't be supporting it....which they pretty much haven't done since the end of 2005 anyway.

Hi, all! I was just searching for a solution for my problem and ran across this similar sounding problem. The big differences are that I have a VIA chipset and a single-core CPU. I have installed the "Vista Drivers" from ATI, but my monitor goes totally blank when starting up Windows Vista. I then must go into Safe Mode and install the Standard VGA Driver to use Windows normally. I have used two separate 9600XT cards (one 256mb and one 128mb) and have had the same thing happen. However, I did fine with the 128Mb card until I installed some "Critical Updates" last night for Vista. Soyo hasn't released any updated drivers since the mobo is a few years old. I am going to install a new set of "Vista blessed" chipset drivers to see if that fixes the problems... I've had to fall back on to a 40Gb PATA HD since Promise has no Vista drivers out for the controller card I have... I have been pulling my hair out over this Vista Ultimate install! The problems here are definitely chipset related. ATi, nVidia, and Intel got their graphics card drivers ready... I think the chipset problems were totally forgotten when these companies were preparing for Vista.

go to http://www.viaarena.com/ and download the latest VIA Hyperion 4in1's, IIRC the latest drivers fix the VIA/ATI vista issue.

Interesting that Via has taken the time to provide support for Vista in older motherboad chipsets while Nvidia can't be bothered ... makes me wonder what the folks over at Nvidia are thinking, because unless you play a lot of games theres no reason to replace an NForce 3 motherboard based system which performs on par with NForce 4's in every way except support for the latest GPU's, AND are a much more current chipset then the skt-462 KT400/600.

It really makes me wonder wether Nvidia really cares about their customers & also may force me to go with Intel chipsets only for my business customers until they have an change of attitude ... funny how Nvidia is touting their stuff for business PC's these days too... what a joke!

Nvidia is scandal late on Vista, and its beta 100 drivers release two days ago (Feb 17) won't even support SLI (their own cherished ATI-busting invention) on anything but 8800's. Too bad if you upgraded to Vista with twin 7950's you bought last year, not five years ago !!

Their driver support for the 8800's in Vista has been close to none-existant with nothing but a beta available on release day & little better then beta available now too ... come to think of it the XP drivers are anything but great too... too bad but they are really slipping.

Yeah, I was actually downloading those new VIA drivers while I was replying. I got them installed and it fixed my onboard RAID issues that I was having also. I have another weird problem with my LCD or ATi card that is happening now... I will post it in it's own thread, because I don't want to get too off topic in this one. Thanks for the reply, Stumps.

Have you guys tried updating the driver for your nVidia AGP host controller through Device Manager? I had the exact same issue on a nForce2 system, and updating the driver through Device Manager and telling it to find a new driver online fixed the problem.
