NF3 Ultra - Dual Core Support?

I can't remember seeing any topic or info about dual core support on the NForce 3 Ultra socket 939 chipset, only on NForce 4 socket 939's. Anyone know if this is planned?

I am not a big gamer so I don't really want to upgrade any of the video cards that I have. I do want to be able to go dual core somewhere down the raod as the multitasking performance looks awesome.

Exactly. AMD64 platform chipsets neither know nor care about how many CPU sockets and cores there are. They're just I/O hardware on an I/O bus - the system core functionality has been pulled into the CPU(s).

... if the board is generally ready to supply enough juice. AMD says, if the board supports _any_ 90-nm CPU flavor, then it's dual-ready.

I've been wondering this lately myself. Since a BIOS update is required, isn't it ultimately up to the manufacturer? Does anyone think MSI will issue a BIOS update for the K8N Neo2 Platinum?

Good question.

Which manufacture will want to update the BIOS to give your current board a significant speed boost when they could save money by NOT upgrading and getting us to purchase a new board?

If you have an older board, I would make sure to let your motherboard maker know you want a bios upgrade for your mobo to go dual-core. Just in case.

"Does anyone think MSI will issue a BIOS update for the K8N Neo2 Platinum?"

It would be rediculous if they didn't, but since this is MSI we're talking about, I'd give them a month or two after the X2's are released before any BIOS update come out, they need a lot of time to sort out how to do this type of thing it seems. Epox has meanwhile already released a BIOS for the 9npa+ series that supports the dualcore processors, not worth anything yet but still gives you peace of mind.

I tried to ask MSI via their online support request form, which said I'd get a confirmation email. However, I never got a confirmation reply, and this is the 2nd time this has happened (1st time was another issue). Thus, unless I hear otherwise, I'm thinking they will not. It's good to know EPoX has already issued BIOS updates. I've been thinking of getting the EP-9NPA+ULTRA nF4 board.

Is EPoX's Web site down? I've been wanting to confirm those BIOS updates for a couple of days now, and I can't seem to connect to their site.

Update: I finally got into their site, but I didn't see any dual core BIOS updates on any of the 9NPA+ boards.

Well, MSI finally replied, and here's what they said (I asked about the nF3 Ultra K8N Neo2 Platinum):

"Dear Customer,

The tests will be done by end of June of 2005 which then if the mb support it then it will have a bios release."

Sincerely,
Technical Support Division
MSI Computer Corp.

Wow, vague much?

I've caught word that MSI has released a beta BIOS for the Neo2 that enables X2 support. Still nothing from Epox for the 9nda3.
