At least you can watch it using AirPlay. AirPlay solves lot of problem for AppleTV and is its killer feature.

Agreed. AirPlay basically destroys the convoluted model of media consumption the content providers want.

Though I feel that AirPlay is in the category of things like: no stickers on the back of phones, no carrier junkware preinstalled, no carrier branding on the phone, etc.

AKA things Apple can get away with that no one else can.

I love my Chromecast, but I wish I didn't need a phone or PC to operate it. So I have gone back to use my Roku 3 or Apple TV more.

This is the fatal flaw of Chromecast - Why tie up a $200-300+ device to drive a TV when Roku 3, Apple TV, etc are <$100. Sure a $35 streaming device is great for those on incredibly tight budgets but for most of us here we'd rather spend the extra $65 and get a device that functions independently.

I am fully in favor of having full Android on TV options, and a Nexus class device would be my preferred way to do it (to join my 5 and 7).

So knowing Google they'll release this device then drag their feet on supporting it while they work on the next new thing that will re-invent our living rooms.

Well it depends on if they do it right. If it becomes another Google TV or Nexus Q, then no doubt Google will need to go back to the drawing board. But if they finally do it right, then I expect they'll support it like it should.

So far this sounds more promising (granted light on details) than their previous attempts.

You sure? I don't think it works on AirPlay. I only get audio because Apple or Amazon won't allow Amazon Instant Video to work on the Apple TV with AirPlay.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Chromecast let's me use devices I already have to control it. I hate having a dedicated remote for every little device. With Chromecast I don't need to learn a new interface, I just use my phone like I normally do and instead watch the video on my TV. It also doesn't tie up your device. Once you hit play the stream is handled by the Chromecast, not your phone or tablet. If the wife and I start watching something on Netflix that we initiated from her phone, and then she leaves half way through, I just pick up my phone and use it to resume control.

It's supposed to work. It's officially supported. Whether or not the app is programmed correctly, that falls on Amazon.

It even says AirPlay is supported on the Amazon Instant Video app description on the App Store. "• Watch on your Apple TV using AirPlay (requires iOS 6.0+ and mirroring disabled)"

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/amazon-instant-video/id545519333

I never used the Amazon app and AirPlay. I'm not primary on Amazon Prime so I don't get the free streaming service.

Okay, it looks like this is a feature they enabled September 17th or around then from the article date. It was probably before then when I last tried it. Not sure why Amazon had AirPlay blocked before it. I almost cancelled Amazon Prime because of it (decided buy enough crap that I want the free 2 day shipping).

It's nice to be able to use my phone to stream content to the Chromecast. But I hate that it's the ONLY way to stream content to it. It's okay with a two hour movie. But if I'm watching short YouTube videos, it gets annoying to have to unlock my phone to switch to another video. Having a dedicated remote would be nice.

It's a $35 device though, so I don't want this to sound like a complaint. I love the Chromecast. But there is definitely room for a more full fledged Nexus TV.

I imagine the Nexus TV will be able to support both a remote because it can run apps directly on the Nexus TV and using my phone or tablet because it'll have Chromecast support as well. This is ideal.

Yeah the enabled AirPlay a few months ago.

I'm sure Apple and Amazon will get together at some point to get a native app.

But why Apple doesn't open the floodgate and make an AppleTV App Store is still just so completely mind-boggling. The only explanation I can think of is that they don't want to appear to be stepping on content providers toes.

What's mind-boggling is that Apple is the one that lets you play your local content and media while Google won't. It's like completely backwards. Apple is the more open one of the two.

Google doesn't need Nexus TV. They just need to open up Chromecast and let us have Plex, XBMC, and mirror our phone and tablets. We're not asking much and all would be easily possible if Google simply removed the restriction.

I had Google TV and it sucked. I also have the chromecast and it's worthless. I think I'm done with Google's half assed attempts at getting into my living room.

I think they all sucked. Granted I am clueless about these things. What they offer basically boils down to:

1. You can play what you have as long as we support the codecs/formats.
2. We collected some highlights and beginning episodes of TV show "XXX" and variety of movies from the 50's to the 90's. You may not know what you've been missing!
3. Here are a few latest shows and movies we are allowed to sell. We hope you think highly of our tastes.

Am I missing something?
