A good, always on scanner like the iPhone is one thing. A mediocre one that requires the phone to be turned 'on' first like the S5 and then swiped isn't more convenient.

Not sure how any other OEM can get as good an implementation as Apple unless they're willing to have a pretty big hardware button like the iPhone, much less a phone with only OSB.

But I do dislike pattern unlock - I've seen far too many phones with pretty clear fingerprint lines along their pattern. Not very hard to figure out.

Are you sure iPhone 5S has an "always on" scanner? My wife's 5S requires a push on the home button and then hold for the scanner to scan. It is actually quite fast, but works only about 70% of the time. To me it still feels odd having to hold the phone in a weird way just to turn it on.

I still think the best place for a finger print scanner is on the side of the phone (if one can make a scanner that thin).

Having it on the back would work (similar to the LG G series button placement), but ultimately I'd rather not have one at all.

Having it on the back (or even better, built into the digitizer somehow) would be fine, but I'm with you on not having one. I don't see it as anything but a wasted budget and wasted man-hours.

Having it on the back doesn't work if your phone is docked in a car or you want to use your phone without picking it up like on your desk.

Meh. It's not something I want, so I didn't put much effort into it.

Good but not nearly the best. The newer LG phones are better as is the Note 3.

The potential leaked phone of the X+1 doesn't seem nearly as good as the LG G3 in this area.

So, the N5 is top 5 in that chart, which doesn't have the LG G3 or S5. So, 7th or so now. Distance to first: ~4%. I'd say it is pretty near the best. 4% of a small number is a much smaller number.

I have not followed X+1 updates, but Nexus devices take innards, not outward appearances. The N4 isn't a G doppelganger, and neither is the N5 to G2. I can concede similarities in body shape, but that's it. I'm not going to speculate on how well the "Shamu" is for bezel to screen until something actually worth basing an assumption on comes around.

I think the issue is no OEM wanted to play along with Silver, and I can see why. Too bad, silver was the best chance for me to buy a non-Nexus anytime soon.

We see what happens. With android one doing good software from the bottom we may android one expanding to the middle and eventually the top.

One is about Mediatek and ameliorating the company's violation of GPL. OEMs want it... if they don't want Silver, they don't want Silver.
