For multitouch, if I am holding the phone in my right hand only, I need to transfer it to my left, and then use my right hand for multitouch.

For tap zoom, I can still have it in my right hand and double tap with my thumb to zoom in without changing hands.

Different situations, but tap zoom does not blow.

very true. and tap zoom kicks in the excellent word wrap of the android browser.

i don't know what i would do without that great feature - it snaps the text to fit the screen very well.

no, they run on differeint wireless technologies. regardless if every feature in the phone is identical, they use different radios to connect to the network, and frequencies in some cases.

If Google wanted it to truly be groundbreaking, it would have had both GSM & CDMA. It's not like it hasn't been done before, http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices/blackberry8800/8800_specifications.jsp

As it stands currently, while it appears to be a really nice phone, getting one is nothing but a huge PITA if you are coming from another carrier. Hopefully Verizon will fix that.

And all of this will only appease the few million users on CDMA. Meanwhile the world's billions of users can be satisfied all through 900/2100. I suppose it's purely financial reasons why we suffer because we're not with the majority =(

Billions ain't buying the Nexus one, heck it's been out a month, and still has yet to reach 100k.

I think the Nexus One has a lot of potential, but I'd like them to rework the antenna, 3G reception seems pretty jacked up from what I read.

I dunno what in the hell Google is thinking with the marketing, they're charging a premium price and retailing it like a commodity. People want to hold a damn cell phone before they buy it. They're going to drag it around for a year or more, difficult to form an opinion from pictures on the internet.

The thing is... They released it on one of the smallest carriers. No one wants to purchase this phone when you're barely going to get 3G service. If it came out on VZW, it'd sell like fucking HOTCAKES. Seriously, that phone has so much potential to do brilliantly on VZW, but they're taking forever to release it!

Was 3g not fixed in the recent 2.1.1 update?

Also, it's just been released that they sold 80k in Jan. While not explosive numbers, lets consider a few things. a)it's holding pretty steady at about 20k a week since release b)it was released on one of the smallest networks in the US. c)it's passed the FCC with ATT bands, so I would assume that would happen pretty soon. We may all grip about ATT, but they can move some phones if they want to. They have a large enough network that a 3g phone like this wouldn't be a near waste on to have.

most people i know are within 20 miles of manhattan 90% of the time. that goes the same for a lot of metro areas where t-mobile has 3g coverage. for many people it's not a waste when you have 3g where you live work and play.

the droid on verizon was backed by a massive marketing campaign and it did well. the nexus one was just talked about on tech blogs and has not even been in any store so we can't compare as you pointed out.

i really wanted to see the nexus one on sprint. sprint's 3g network is fast, more reliable than at&t, and for those who like size, it's a lot bigger as well. you get a top quality network with t-mobile prices. best of both worlds.

i've been reading things about deutsche telekom looking to raise capital for T-Mobile USA for a massive investment in network infrastructure. that would be pretty cool.

maybe verizon is too much of a shitty hardass negotiator when it comes to phones, they lost out on the iPhone and the palm pre and the nexus one. anytime a major new player is launched, verizon never has it.

I think you could call the Droid a major new player. It put Motorola back in the game, and is the first decent smartphone for Verizon, IMO. You are right about Verizon missing out on the iPhone, but they have the pre now, and are suppose to have the nexus one sometime in the spring.

VZW also got the Pre Plus. After the 1.4 WebOS update hits, I think the Pre Plus will be a competitor with every other high-end phone out there. It has to have the right marketing scheme though, why is VZW marketing this towards Moms?

good point, the droid is a major release.

they have the pre now, but they didn't have the debut was my point.

it is telling that verizon just got it's first good smartphone this late in the game perhaps. maybe they are just really good negotiators, to the point where good is good for some margins, but bad for the end consumer - they are riding their network coattails.

i went from sprint while having at&t for my last job, to now t-mobile. sprint was the best, at&t the worst, and t-mobile in the middle. i am an urban dweller - and really, i have service wherever i go that i need it with either of the three with a few misses here or there but nothing too bad. at&t was actually a bit bad, but so far sprint and t-mobile really have good quality for where i live, work & play. most people i know are in the NY metro area for most of their time, as in 90%+. this is where we do everything.

most people dont travel so damn much to need a network everywhere - but having a phone that you use day in day out that is great to use is more rewarding than knowing you can have 3G in east jabib, alabama if you ever chose to go there. i think verizon should re-examine its priorities at this point. perhaps the droid is a signal that they are finally turning a page?

What do you mean by "compare"? Because I'm pretty sure Verizon stores won't have the N1, you'll still have to buy online through google. Are you expecting more and/or different features on the Verizon version? I think what you see on paper right now for the Nexus One is the same Verizon will be getting. I'm keenly interested if that's not the case though, because I'm hung up between the two phones right now as well (eligible for NE2 now, just can't decide what I want!)

Ahh see, I wasn't even aware that they wouldn't be 'in store'. I naturally would want to do a 'hands on' comparison. I just started looking into phones this past week since my upgrade is coming so I wasn't aware that Google wasn't making these available in store. I agree with others that this is a huge mistake because that will likely end my interest in it.

Come to think of it I'm not sure how that would work anyway if I get a discount from VZ for my 2 year upgrade, but they don't even sell the phone.
