Nexus one Update : Multitouch!

"Starting today, Nexus One users will begin to receive an over-the-air software update on their phones. This update provides some great new features, and fixes a few problems that some users might have experienced, including:

Google Goggles: this mobile application will now be available directly on your device by launching it from your All Apps menu. Just use your Nexus One camera to start searching the web

Google Maps: the Maps application with be updated to a new version, Google Maps 3.4, which will include:

• Starred items synchronized with maps.google.com - access your favorite places from your phone or computer
• Search suggestions from your personal maps.google.com history - makes it easy to search for places you've searched for before
• Night mode in Google Maps Navigation - automatically changes your screen at night for easier viewing and driving

Pinch-to-zoom functionality: devices will now include a new pinch-to-zoom mechanism in the phone's Browser, Gallery and Maps applications


3G connectivity: we will provide a general fix to help improve 3G connectivity on some Nexus One phones"

That's where it really needs it. I don't care about pinch on maps or anything but multi-touch on an on-screen keyboard is a must for fast typing.

This is a pretty significant update. Multitouch is the universal complain with US Android phones - not to mention some otherwise nice updates to Navigation to help it compete with the standalone products, and including Goggles.

Bring it to Droid already!

exactly what I think. pinch zoom is nice, but fast typing is a must, so can someone with a N1 verify the keyboard? well you have to be a fast typer to begin with though

Just downloaded the update. It does support MT on the default android keyboard. Seems to work quite nicely, but I never use the phone in landscape mode so MT isn't a big deal for me.

I really enjoy the multi touch on my G1.

Interesting that the multitouch release came after Job's publicized comments about Google. As someone commented, they suspected Apple/Google had a "gentleman's agreement" to keep multitouch off US bound Android phones.

Very nice. I don't have any Android phone yet, my NE2 deal for Verizon isn't up until 3/10 but I may wait since the N1 is coming to Verizon in spring. I've seen a few rumors as soon as the end of March.

I did check out the Droid and like it, but I may as well hold out a bit to compare.

What do you mean by "compare"? Because I'm pretty sure Verizon stores won't have the N1, you'll still have to buy online through google. Are you expecting more and/or different features on the Verizon version? I think what you see on paper right now for the Nexus One is the same Verizon will be getting. I'm keenly interested if that's not the case though, because I'm hung up between the two phones right now as well (eligible for NE2 now, just can't decide what I want!)

The fact that you can't see & touch the N1 before ordering, is a major marketing error, IMO. No wonder it isn't selling.

And the Verizon version will have to be a bit different. It needs to work on CDMA. The T-mo version can't.

But what is this going to mean practically? Going from GSM to CDMA isn't going to change other features of the phone.

I installed the mt google maps onto my G1. I don't really find mt on the maps app that useful since I only use my phone with one hand unless i need to type fast. G1 has a keyboard, so I don't really need mt for that either..

no, they run on differeint wireless technologies. regardless if every feature in the phone is identical, they use different radios to connect to the network, and frequencies in some cases.

You are absolutely correct Deeko. I just wanted someplace to make quick posts from each phone, and now that I've gotten home, they're edited.

That being said, multitouch/pinchzoom is a wonderful feature.

Neffing on iPhone. This thing is amazing. Now I see the big deal about multitouch, and for that matter, the lack of a physical keyboard really isn't a problem. Verizon needs this phone.
