Nexus 9 - Oct 15 - $399

If this thing was $400 for 32 GB WiFi and $500 for LTE (32 GB or 64 GB), it would be much easier to swallow depending on how long its battery lasts.

With this generation of Nexus products, this is my biggest complaint.

I could see them upping the storage in 3 months (probably to a 32/64 standard), but I am still using a 2012 Nexus 7, and I have been waiting for a refresh for a YEAR now (last year I wanted a Nexus 10 refresh and literally followed every rumor)...so I may pay the "tax" and get the 32gb version.

I noticed all the new Apple devices go 16->64gb. I am wondering if they are trying to stockpile 32gb nand, while dumping all their 16gb nand, and just going to start offering 32gb baseline (finally) next generation. This is obviously pure speculation, but still...if Apple were to go 32gb base then the competition would not have a choice.

Another joke...I keep waiting for the "Retina" battery from Apple so all the other manufacturers pursue big batteries the same way they have gone overboard with pixel density.

I dunno, on the one hand, if I want to be price conscious, I can get a Samsung Galaxy TabPro 8.4 for barely above 200€, and on the other hand, If I want to go big and premium, there's the iPad Air 2.

To me, the Nexus 9 loses out at both ends. Not interested.
 
The single-threaded CPU performance and the GPU performance of Nexus 9 runs circles around TabPro 8.4 (not to mention the fact that the Nexus 9 has a true 64-bit CPU running on a 64-bit enabled OS, and a much more forward looking GPU architecture too with support for Unreal Engine 4 and all the latest and greatest API's including Android Extension Pack). So you get what you pay for, so to speak.

Note that Nexus 9 will ship with the Android "L" OS and with some 64-bit native apps such as Chrome, Gmail, Calendar, Google Play Music, etc.

You see, not everybody is a gamer. The TabPro does just fine for stuff like browsing, reading, and moderate gaming. And it's basically half the price.

That's the kind of niche the Nexus 7 used to occupy: quality budget device, cheap, but pretty good for a lot of tasks.

On the other hand, if I want to have the best of everything, I sure as hell wouldn't choose the Nexus 9 over the iPad Air 2. It's just a tweener device that occupies a space that hardly anyone cares about.

And btw, what the hell do I care whether my Mail or Calendar App is native 64 bit? That's just ridiculous. Even full fledged desktop applications like Office 2013 are usually still 32 bit (I know there's a 64 bit version, but just about everyone uses the 32bit one). So why the heck should I care whether my calendar app is "native 64 bit"???

...or someone may want a premium Android device? It's 80% of the price of an iPad Air regardless if you want to talk about both ends of the spectrum.

I just wish they had done 32/64 instead of 16/32.

No. They simply learned that 32 GB is a sweet spot while 16 GB is a little short for the majority of consumers so they decided to cut that option out of their lineup. It's how Apple's capitalism works.

Adding 16GB to the Nexus 9? $80 increase

Adding 32GB to the Nexus 6? $50 increase

I was set on buying both before I saw the price. Now I'm not sure if I'll get either.

I get that the old pricing might be unsustainable, but I would expect at gradual increase, maybe charge $500 for the Nexus 6, not an insane doubling of the price of the previous phone.

Denver will be the best Android SoC for browsing.

The Nexus 7 was a cheap product with an outdated SoC. The Nexus 9 is up to date. You can still buy the Nexus 7 2013 version anyway, so...

Caveats:

1. The Nexus 9's Tegra K1 is running in 32-bit. 64-bit should be a bit faster. 5-7% faster?
2. Geekbench says it's running at 2.5 GHz, not the advertised 2.3 GHz. Dunno if that's accurate.
3. No Apple A8X (iPad Air 2) available yet for head to head comparison. I'm guessing the A8X is roughly 20% faster than A8 for CPU. (1.7 GHz in iPad vs. 1.4 GHz in iPhone) That's just a guess though, based on vague Apple benchmark PR.

They should have done 32/64 on the tablet priced at 400 / 450 / 550 (LTE). I am really hoping they update the storage like they did with the gen 1 Nexus 7.
 
Well there will be two phones by end of Oct with 805 (driod turbo and note 4). I'm going with the note 4 but this is off topic; I would definitely by the nexus 9 IFF HTC put out a version with an SD slot. Else I guess it iwll be an 8.4 tab something or other.
