Hey guys. Going to be trekking it out in Colombia for a few weeks. Was wondering which one to bring along as my primary computing device and e-book reader. I think the nexus is smaller/more portable. However, the iPad is definitely a superior replacement for bringing a laptop but I'm concerned that the shiny apple logo might be asking for trouble down there.

Thoughts?

Kind of glad you already broached the idea of it possibly being stolen, because I would have felt kind of like a jerk being the one to do it. :)

I'd go with the Nexus 7 because it's cheap, and certainly good enough. If it gets stolen, it's less of a loss. If it gets broken, lost, or anything else happens to it... Your wallet will thank you if you go with the Nexus 7.

ditto. also coke dealers are less likely to kill you over a nexus 7. and the silvery ipad backing is more likely to attract river monsters

if i were doing a couple weeks of backpacking i wouldnt take any type of electronics with me, i wouldnt want to have to worry about breaking it or getting water on it. youll have a lot more fun without something like that with you

I wouldn't waste my time with either. I love to travel and just finished a week Trekking in Peru, and the only thing I had with me aside from my SLR was my hrm/gps wtch, and a small portable battery to keep it charged each night.

Enjoy the trip, enjoy the travels, and enjoy the peoples. We trekked a lot (somewhere between 10-12 miles per day) and I never once found a scenario where I said "I wish I had my laptop".

If I had to, I'd take the Nexus7. Small and light will rule the day in Trekking.

I'm gonna be awkward and say neither.

Get a decent smartphone and a sizeable usb battery pack (or solar charger if you're going off grid).

A smartphone is less obtrusive and easier to store so less likely to get nicked and you'll get similar functionality.

Take the Nexus 7. It will be a lot more portable and if you're mainly using it as an e-reader, it will probably be more useful in that aspect.

Pick the option which is least likely to mark you out as having ransom value. (It had to be said...)

This why I keep my iTouch. Great for sending emails and the occasional web surfing. Small enough that it does not get in the way and I don't really care if someone walks off with it when I'm traveling.
