My Razr M seems to be transmitting only on 5 MHZ for tethering. My laptop sees it on A and N networks. I can connect fine with the laptop. The Nexus 7 does not see it at all. The N7 does have dual band, so I am a bit stumped here.
I can tether the N7 to the Razr M with bluetooth OK.
Any suggestions?

This is news to me.

I'm actually surprised two mobile devices can talk to each other. I always thought wifi tethering was for Android to Windows.

i tether android to android all the time. OP check in N7 advanced wifi settings - it may be set to 2.4ghz only.

Thanks, but there is nothing like that in the 'advanced' wireless menu. Luckily I am still running a G network here at home and never noticed.

The official specs say that the Nexus 7 wifi chip is b/g/n 2.4Ghz capable. It can't handle the 5Ghz band at all.

Apparently there may be different varieties as well. The wireless chip in my wifi only Nexus 7 (8 GB model) is B/G 2.4Ghz only. Yours may be the same.

Thanks a ton man. They advertise it as dual band, glad to see it was not just me.
Now, why is my Razr M only sharing on 5 ghz? No setting for that either, argh.

The old dog figured it out :D
The Razr was set to channel = auto
I'm guessing that either:
A) default is 5 GHZ A/N or
B)it looked around, saw clutter in B/G 2.4 GHZ and went there.
I set it to channel = 3 and now it is golden. Shows up in my lappy as BGN now.

i have razr m too and tethering on it is really flaky, much worse than on my old razr. it will all of the sudden get unusably slow, or will lose the connection entirely, say in the middle of a youtube video. its bad enough it may get a different phone, but im guessing razr hd uses the same chips

My Razr M has been great at tethering albeit I generally use the USB cable instead of the wireless tethering. I usually get between 20 - 30 mbps on the down and between 3 - 6 mbps on the upside. Even when using wireless I only have 2.4 GHz capability on my desktop and notebook, but have had no issue there also.
