Nexus 6 - Google Plus required?

Been holding off on a phone upgrade until the Nexus 6 was available on vzw. In the meantime I had ordered a Nexus 6 for an employee through the motorola site, and when I went back to check the order status it asked me to sign in with a google account. 😵 OK, so I went to use one of the company webmaster accounts and it then told me I need to create a google plus account in order to continue. 😵 No thanks, I'll just bother customer service.

With all of this pushing to google plus just to check the order status for a motorola.com order, I'm now wondering if this is a requirement to use the Nexus. Can anyone tell me if this is the case or not?

no, it's not a requirement for the device, can't speak to motorola's site.

I got mine day one from motorola directly but checked out as a guest and still got order info emailed to me.

Google+ is not a requirement. Neither is a Google Account, but without a Google Account, you will not be able to download any new applications through the Google Store, but SMS/phone calls all will work. Sounds like this is for work.

Our IT department here handles Android phones with a global locked down corporate account. They push out (well auto download off the Store using the company account) approved application. They also do allow guest accounts on the phone which the employee then can use for their personal use at their own risk. Risk being that anything they do on that company device is obviously under scrutiny since the company paid for the device and phone/data plan.

You can buy Nexus 6 unlocked and it will work on VZ's network. You're probably waiting for a contract deal I'm guessing.

That's good news. I don't have a problem being signed in with any old google account for google play access.

Hopefully they don't go all big brother and don't make a + account mandatory as that would totally turn me off of the Android platform.

This one phone was for an employee based out of another country and isn't on the US vzw business account. For my phone I have to purchase on the vzw account, so I've been waiting for it to be released on vzw before making a decision on that or the iPhone 6 / plus.

All three platforms, Android, IOS, Windows Phone make it seem like an account is required. Windows Phone, I found was the most willing to allow you to continue without one.

In all cases whenever I setup a phone or tablet for a relative I always enter 8675309@jenny.com as an email with a bad password. All three eventually let me continue without an account. That # also works well as a grocery card discount phone number. Jenny is very POPULAR. 🙂
