Nexus 5 vs Nexus 7 + Moto G

I know I make a lot of these threads as I bounce around a lot, but here's the scoop.

My daughter dropped my Nexus 10 tablet in the toilet and it sat there for a couple hours without us even knowing. I had it in the bathroom for well, reading on the job, earlier Friday evening.

Unfortunately, its showing no signs of life any more, even after the rice thing for a couple days.

I use my Tablet more than my phone, and loved my N10, so I was so disappointed in it being gone.

Long story short... I don't have the $$ right now to buy another one, so I sold my Nexus 5 32GB for $400, bought a Moto G for $140 used (but like new) and a 32GB Nexus 7 (2nd Gen)for $200 used. (also not a scratch on it)

It just got me thinking - I think I'd always rather have this Combo compared to a Nexus 5 on its own. Moto G is 4.4.2 and even has ART now, and honestly it feels snappy. Its more comfortable in hand than the Nexus 5, and its colors pop better too (stock).

Would you rather have a Nexus 5 on its own, or a Moto G + N7 32GB 2013?

I would rather have a Galaxy s4 Active, which I do, so it's toilet proof

Nexus 5 without question.

Moto G lacks LTE.

Could Not care less personally . I've never bought any phone with LTE as a requirement

Here HSPA+ is just as fast LTE in bandwidth and the latency difference is very exaggerated for mobile use, but to each there own.

I notice huge difference between LTE and HSPA+. If you can't notice, good for you. You should be able to save some money.

If you use your tablet more than your phone, obviously:
Good phone + great tablet > great phone and no tablet.

I have the nexus 5 and nexus 7 2013 combo.

it's quite perfect. the only thing that might be better is the LG Google Play 8" tablet.

anything bigger than 8" just not needed IMO.

I miss my Nexus 10 already - I loved it. Was running CM11 and Franco on it, it never worked better.

I will probably upgrade to the 8" depending on price when it comes out.

I'd buy another N10 but I don't want to shell out $350-400 for a used one when something better can be had for less.

I would personally prefer that combination as well. The Moto G gets the job done for a phone and the Nexus 7 takes care of tablet needs. Kudos to you.

If the Nexus 10 did the job for you, you may want to consider the Asus MemoPad FHD as a stopgap... $250 for 10" 1080p IPS, CloverTrail+, and expandable storage is a very good deal. No flashing fun, though.

And personally I couldn't do without LTE.

Already got the Nexus 7 - I need at least one Nexus device to satisfy my flashing/tinkering needs to :) I'm also weary of X86 and Android.

As far as LTE, I guess I'm not a big enough Data user to notice it. (I'm on Wifi 90% of my day, work and home). HSPA+ is fine. I get over 20 download and 10 upload on HSPA+ here, compared to 30 down and 15 up on LTE. I know, I know, Latency... but for all I use it for, HSPA+ is more than enough.

Side News - A New position was created in a hurry at my office today and I seem to be the best fit for it. I applied and interview for it Friday. If I get it, I will get a company iPhone 5s as part of the job... making me probably sell the Moto G haha. Much rather have the Moto G, but a company paid capable cell is better than any cell in my book.

If you decide on selling, let me know how much you want for the G. I agree though, I'd rather have the G than the iPhone. The iPhone Camera is the only thing I'd want.

For a similar topic, I just got my N5 today. Little wary about the battery coming from a Note 2, but SO HAPPY to be on Nexus Android (I have a 1st generation Nexus 7 so I knew what to expect).

My dilemma is trying to decide on a new tablet. I wanted to wait for new Nexus 10 that never came. I like the fact that a Nexus 7 is pocket-able. I think I would like a Nexus 8 IF they made one.

I am just so impatient. I keep saying I will run down the road to Microcenter and pick up the 2013 Nexus 7, but something keeps stopping me. Honestly, if the bezels were a little smaller on the Nexus 7 2013 I would already own it (the bezels were big enough on the 2012, why did they EXTEND them further).

Sorry for the derail, just going through tablet purchase pain.

the LG 8" Google Play Dev Edition is pretty much just that. with microSD storage.

This may sound strange, as I am an engineer, and function should always come before form..but on tablets I *HATE* the rounded top/bottom parts of the LG. I also prefer the black front with no logo of the Nexus devices.

I am firmly in the Android camp, but I have considered pairing my Android phone with an iPad Air due to the fact that I primarily use my tablet for browsing and gaming, and widgets aren't as important as they are on my phone (where I have 5 home screens with nothing but widgets).

I invested quite a bit on games in the Play Store, but I owned an iPhone years ago, and my wife still does, so it is not a huge deal if I had to use both ecosystems.

I still just cannot believe that iOS is a *WALL OF ICONS*. Seriously Apple, widgets were not invented by Android, if you allow them...you won't be accused of copying. Regardless, I think widgets on iOS would help both platforms as widgets would improve on the Play Store.

The GPad 8.3 is OK but I'm leaning towards a NotePro 8.4. Shipping on 2/13 for $399. Slightly better specs for screen, CPU, and camera. But it's TouchWiz so that could be a deal breaker for some folks.

A GPE version would be great though.

I'm finally all nexus and very happy. After years of skinned android I was done. The nexus 5 is not perfect, mostly cause they should have put a bigger battery in it but the joy of naked android makes up for the shortcomings

IMO, get the best phone your budget allows and leave the tablet as an after thought, if bothering with it at all. The impact a phone has on daily life is just orders of magnitude greater and you'll want to do all your android stuff on as powerful a device as possible.

Go with the GPE Gpad.

Moto G + N7. Moto G is one of the nicest Android phones to come out in a long time. Its battery life completely decimates the N5 so it's a far more practical phone.
