Next Xbox 360 to have Blu-Ray.....

not really a rumor. It's inevitable. If Microsoft wanted to continue to sell an HDM player, after HD DVD's death they are going to need to get a BD player. But, would the 360 be capable of the same kind of software power the PS3 is doing? That's an honest question, I don't know the kind of resource demand the BD playback requires from the PS3.

if they don't care about selling those external drives as an option once HD DVD dies... then maybe they won't make a BD drive. It'll be interesting to see Microsoft follow no HDM drive route.

If the 360 can decode HD DVD, it can decode Blu-Ray. They were using the same codecs.

I'm sure the rumors that MS will be making a 360 with a built-in Blu-Ray drive will run rampant now. I doubt they will for pretty much the same reason they didn't make one with a HD DVD drive built-in - cost + read speeds.

For the Xbox 3/720, I'm sure they'll support Blu-Ray since that'll be the defacto disc at the time and the read speed problem will be solved by then.

Microsoft prefers to rent and sell downloadable content.

The only reason they'll do this is if they're convinced that they can take away sales from the PS3 by offering an add-on to the 360. If the price is $149 and playback is flawless then they probably can.

A model with internal blu-ray wasn't possible before because the read speed is slower than DVDs, which would break games depending on streaming from the DVD. Perhaps there are faster blu-ray drives now?

Did they need any special help with the HD DVD drive to allow it to be used over USB? Sony might not be willing to bend any rules if that's whats required.

No. The protection happens with AAC, BD+, and HDCP. It does not rely on the disc's encrypted data being protected - only the decoded data. There's nothing special about SATA that prevents it from being snooped any more than USB.

That said, the article's source is pretty weak, and I wouldn't put a lot of stock in it being "definitive". I'm still thinking we won't even use optical media in the next Xbox...

The other thing is what about all of the previous installed base with regular DVD players? How will MS deal with that in games and hardware?

How many times does Microsoft need to remind people that the drive would be for movies only and not games.

Do people really want Blu-Ray?

I'm serious - is it actually in demand? Will it be in the next few years?

I only ask because I have a 46" 1080p TV, and I have a pretty large collection of regular DVDs and 0 interest in investing in a high definition movie player. Lately I've been streaming DIVX DVD-rips of TV shows to my 360 and it looks fantastic. I've seen the picture quality of both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD movies, and it's nice, but do people really care? I always hear HD vs. DVD paralleled to VHS vs. DVD, but the difference is nowhere near as close - I just don't see the need.

Add that to the fact that Microsoft already offers 720p downloadable media in their marketplace, and I think Blu-Ray is an unnecessary addition - especially if it isn't used for games.

Why did you get a good HD TV if you have NO interest in HD? Seems like a complete waste of potential on your part. HD is getting to the mainstream and I know a ton of people (me included) would like to have the money to switch. The difference is quality in both sound and picture is definitely worth the price... you can tell the difference in movies like 300.

You would be surprised at the number of people out there that buy HDTVs and have no interest or knowledge about buying a HD source and just play SD material...and worse...they streeeeeetch it out.

Sadly, my Dad is one of these people. It's a battle between the two of us when I visit as I'm constantly putting the source to the correct aspect ratio and he goes back to stretching it out.

My dad is also in that book, he's got TWO HDTVs and no HD coming in other than OTA, which he never uses.

This is purely a rumor that's probably based on the whole Microsoft saying that they'd probably go Blu-Ray if it ends up being the victor. My friend actually sent me an e-mail on this topic this morning saying how he found <edit>all the rumors amusing</edit>. I just sent him back something along the lines of:

Hah, it?s some boring fan that got a chub at the thought and said something like, ?wouldn?t it be awesome to have a?? then the telephone effect went into place and now we have these rumors :p.

I have a HDTV and I enjoy it, but I don't rebuy every single DVD that I own on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I will rebuy some but upconversion still works very well on some DVDs. Especially on cartoons/CG movies, because the intricacy is not there.

Is it alright to buy an xbox360 now? I'm merely wanting to play games cause I've still got a standard tv... just worried incase they start rolling out bluray games out making the current batch obsolete.

Why doesn't anybody ever read... they will NEVER MAKE GAMES ON ANY HD DISC. They already said that. Many many many times. The add-on drives are for movies only and it won't change. Now is a great time to get a 360 given the library of games, the fact that what's in stores now is supposedly more stable, etc...

Yes, it is just fine to buy a 360 right now.

Just to reiterate - MS will not be making a 360 with a Blu-Ray drive built in. MS will not be making games on Blu-Ray. All for pretty much the same reason that they did not do so with HD DVD...cost, read speeds, and splitting the user base.

The only thing we will likely see is a Blu-Ray add-on that will be used to play movies only.

Thanks for the confirmation. Apologies for not doing the research myself, just wanted a quick and easy answer as I'm getting it tonight. Read this thread, which made me doubt what I was about to do for a second, that's all.

I have no interest in Blu-Ray. I never said I dislike HD content. HD is just a resolution.

As I said, I have a large DVD collection with a fine upconverting (or upscaling? CKRanger don't kill me) DVD player. I know many, many other people (read: 4, in forum-speak) who also have large DVD collections. They don't want to re-buy movies in HD either, as the difference doesn't merit the price.

I was just curious about how great the demand for this format actually is. I can't imagine this catching on until a couple years, and by that point the release of a new Microsoft console will be looming (assuming Microsoft actually decides to release a new console).

Edit: And also - even if I had no interest in HD content - I think it's pretty difficult to find a new, large TV (> 40") that is not HD. For many people, size is really the only importance.

I think there are way more people out there like you and me that could care less about blue-ray or hs-dvd. Upscaling DVD players work fine. I'm not rebuying 300 dvds I already have and I have no interest in paying the larger price for Blu-Ray disks. It just isn't worth it to me and never will be. I guarantee when I buy my PS3 in a couple months, I'll never buy a blu-ray movie for it.

It's just a matter of time. People said the same thing about VHS and DVD. No one expects anyone to rebuy their entire library. I've been resistant to change but lately after having watched HD-DVD/Blu-Ray content vs regular DVD (even upscaled), I'm just blown away at the difference. Not everyone will adopt early or even now, but eventually BR will replace DVD and DVD will be a thing of the past.

I see this reasoning all the time yet it's horribly flawed. As RagingBITCH points out, what makes you think you have to re-buy all your current DVDs? Blu-ray players all play DVDs too. I've picked up a few of my favorite movies in BR, but for the most part I'm just renting/buying new movies on BR. And, yeah, the players are pretty expensive right now, but the movies have been cheap online. You're making a mistake if you're paying $30 at retail B&M stores. Granted, most of the BOGOs and such were likely due to the format war, but I've probably spent $10-12 on average for all my BR discs so far. Even with the format war ending you will likely be able to find good deals online. Hell, just sign up for Netflix and rent everything in Blu-ray. If you have an HDTV you're just wasting its full potential by being stubborn about sticking 100% with DVD.

I've got a largish DVD collection, and I would like to continue to be able to watch them. That being said, I still plan on getting a PS3 later this year for upconversion and BluRay capabilities. I love HD. I just wish there were more HD channels.
