correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't know of any superpower that claimed this unofficial title without winning wars. the u.s. ascended to the
top spot on account of her showing in wwII and afterwards leading the successful scrimmage against the soviet union through proxy conflicts,
both military and intellectual. ofcourse, the fact that the soviet economy, state, and ideology were bankrupt helped too.

I think China is at least 50 years away from becoming the dominant world power. It's not likely to happen unless her population size is reduced to half of what it is today and that there is a gradual political reform (non Russian-like).

I think a "Superpower" is not quite that complex. The US and USSR were superpowers for these reasons IMO:

1) Nukes, many many nukes. Enough to rearrange the rubble multiple times after destroying the world
2) Ability to threaten Military action anywhere in the World and in all likelyhood win against anyone except another Superpower
3) Ability to Fund or Affect Political situations anywhere in the world, whether it be by support of sitting government or through funding/supply of Revolutionaries

I don't think a history of victory is necessary, though the US and USSR had that.

None for the forseeable future.

The Socialists of the Soviet Union believed they could do surpass the US. Then it was communist China. Then everyone believed Japan would do the job. Now it's slowly reforming China again...

It took about 130 years for the US to become the power, and the only reason it happened then was due to the World Wars that happened in Europe.

Unless there happens to be a large scale war happening on US turf, it aint going to happen soon. I do believe that America will implode before that happens (or during)... not because of the upcoming generations (which is what the old people think every generation) but rather simply Democracy as a system will not last. (I'm some what of a Marxist... please note that Soviet Union/China were NOT Marxist revolutions.)

That's probably why they refer to the Soviet Union as Marxist-Lenninist ;)

As far as China is concerned though, it isn't a communist nation, although it remains authoritarian with some communist elements in certain areas.
