Troubleshooting starter

  1. Overview of the problem
    Computer simply won't turn on.

  2. Full description of the problem and symptoms
I built this system about 10 months ago and it ran like a champ. No OC'ing, nothing out of the specs. It literally was fine when I left (on stand by) and when I returned it was dead. I hit the pwr button - nothing....no fans, not even on the pwr supply.

  3. Did it work normally at one time, or has the problem always existed?
Rock solid for 10 months. Nothing new installed (the last thing I did was bring a folder of mp3s from a jump drive onto the desktop - hadn't even peeked inside yet.)

  4. I already tried these steps:

Took the RAM and the pwr supply to Fry's and asked them nicely to check them out -both were good.

Outlets good too -and all the switches in the 'on' position. Also checked to make sure I was getting contact (pushed in all the cords.)
  5. My software:
    • Windows XP Media center Edition with everything up to date
    • Don't think other software details would be relevant to the issue

  6. My hardware
    • Mobo GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS4 LGA 775
    • CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz (not overclocked)
    • XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler
    • Video card VisionTek 900241 Radeon HD 4850 512MB l
    • RAM G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066
    • Power supply Coolermaster real power pro 750w
    • also have a couple dvd burners
    • HD Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB
    • Case NZXT TEMPEST Crafted Series CS-NT-TEM-B Black Steel

  7. Other information that might be relevant

when you press the power button, the computer won't turn on at all? no fans spinning up or anything? Any of the motherboard light on? Few things to try out, any spare powersupplys around? or any other computers in your house you could pull a powersupply out of and try it in your computer.

Nothing, no fans, no lights, nothing. Having another pwr supply won't help, I've already established that the PS is not the issue (and already tried another PS just in case Fry's was wrong.)

I have another mobo but it's not compatible (and neither then would the cpu be.)

You say it does not turn on.

Try this: Follow the 2 wires from the Power Button to the Motherboard. Jump the 2 pins
momentarily and see if it starts up. If it does, then either the Power button is bad or the wires going to it have an OPEN or break in one of them.

Next step is to try a new CMOS Battery on the motherboard. Also check for any connectors that may not be fully seated.

alternatively, you can also jump your power supply to see if it will turn on by bridging the green wire on the 24 pin cable with any black wire to ground the psu starter wire. if it doesnt turn on the psu is at fault. i doubt its that tho. i have the same PSU but probably twice the load you have on it and i only draw 500w at full load, had it since 2007ish

He does not need to do that as he brought his power supply to Fry's and they tried it in another computer. It worked, so it should be ok.

WE HAVE A WINNER!

Bad power button...whew. Jumping worked and then I was able to fix the pwr button. Wow...(The guy at the local comp store (not a chain store) came up with the solution too, and actually didn't charge me-guess who I'm going to buy my next upgrade parts from?

Glad to support the locals, and thanks for the replies too :)

This guy could've easily sold me a mobo...very cool that he was honest. I bought a small item on the spot and will definitely be back.
