Latino Review, citing anonymous “trusted sources,” ran a report this morning that Marvel Studios plans to adapt the 2006 comic book storyline “Planet Hulk” — where the smash-prone anti-hero gets launched into space for the good of humanity – during the second Avengers movie, followed by a stand-alone Hulk film where he goes on to conquer the war-torn alien planet where he lands. According to the site’s pseudonymous “El Mayimbe,” the plan would also include a third Avengers movie adapting World War Hulk, the final installment of “Planet Hulk” where the Hulk returns to Earth with an alien army to revenge himself against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Lot of potential here.

i hope they put Brainhulk in the movie too

Planet Hulk was hands-down my favorite comic storyline of 2006-2007. The blu-ray animated movie is pretty good too, but of course they had to trim out a lot of the story to get it down to a shorter length.

I'm wondering how they'd pull it off though, given that the storyline for Silver Surfer in the Fantastic Four series kinda sucked, and Galactus, well... I won't even go there. In the animated short, they substituted Beta Ray Bill for Silver Surfer, but they haven't unveiled BRB in any of the Marvel movies yet, so I'm not sure who'd they put in (maybe Thor?)

The storyline doesn't make much sense in the 'avengers movie' hulk story. Basically it is given that the hulk is under control and reasonable by the end of the avengers movie (minus the disney style slapstick comedy).

So they would need some kind of plot device to take him out of control.

In the comic book, he was somewhat in control when they launched him into outer space (they conned him into going up to a satellite to combat some AI monster that was controlling the equipment on a satellite). Even though he was in control, they launched him into space anyways, stating that he caused too much collateral damage every time he went berserk, and thus was a liability.

The other reason, hidden of course, was that they wanted him out of the picture before the "Civil War" event started. I can see Marvel building up to the Civil War, but they would need more heroes, I would think, to make it an effective storyline. There is a lot of potential story material to pull from, but I'm not sure how they're going to remove so much of it to make a movie out of it; to really do the story proper you'd need a series of shows, so they'll have to slice out the vast majority of the story.

Wait...what about Reed Richards and Black Bolt? Namor should be in there as well. Then you have Silver Surfer...I dont know if they established enough characters in the Marvel Studio's films to do it in the article's timeframe. If he isnt betrayed by Illuminati and just sort of randomly sent into space, having a third Avengers movie which is basically World War Hulk would kinda be flat. Part of what makes WWH so bad ass is that Hulk takes on everyone. I suppose Stark could just do it on his own, but that seems counter to the relationship he and Banner had in the Avengers movie.

Whatever they do, I'd be there opening night to watch it in 3D.

marvel doesn't even have the rights to the fantastic four and the silver surfer, they'll have to change the story/cast.

Plus it would be hard to show both Captain America and Human Torch at the same time, given they are the same actor.

I'm hoping Marvel purchases the rights to the Fanatastic Four and reboots it at some point.

Here's how I picture it going down: The avengers will be up against a big bad in Avengers 2. At some point, after the team defeats the big bad, Hulk will be up in a spaceship for whatever reason and instead of returning to earth will get jettisoned into space. The credits will roll, then the after-credits scene will have Hulk smashing the ship controls and the ship will fall into a wormhole.

Hulk will have his own Planet Hulk movie (3rd Hulk movie). Avengers 3 will have Hulk return to earth and beat up whatever heroes are in the storyline at the time. I don't think Marvel will bring in Sentry, Dr. Strange, etc. and I have doubts they will bring in the X-men either (although it would be fun to see Hugh Jackman as Wolverine getting beat to crap by the Hulk). Since they have to trim the storyline, I imagine it will basically be Hulk versus the avengers and whoever else they can scrape up.

When I first heard about this I was wondering why out of all the stories they have with the Hulk they're talking about this one which already had a movie out there. Then I remembered Marvel comics editorial mandate to create a higher focus on Marvel's intergalactic IPs. I'm betting all of this has to do with grabbing onto the Star Wars hype that will be hitting full stride about the time this movie looks ready to drop.

Yeah I'm curious to see how their "Guardians of the Galaxy" will turn out, if it happens.

Looks to be happening. They have James Gunn to direct, script I think is close to done and Chris Pratt just signed on as one of the characters (not sure which one).
