For example, in the next episode of "Half-Life 2" (due in the first quarter of next year) Valve plans to kill off one of the franchise's regular characters.

Making such a move, particularly with characters that have become beloved in a major franchise is a risky one. But Newell said by introducing such a shocking twist, it can help the "Half-Life" story from becoming "just another watered-down serialized narrative."

Sorry, but if you kill off major characters, i get less interested.

Look at Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick. When they killed off the last of the original characters from Pitch Black (except for Riddick), i no longer cared about the next installment of the franchise.

So do you think it's a good or bad thing to kill off a regular character to keep things fresh? WHY?

I think killing a familiar but not super-important character can help make the story interesting, and the whole idea in the HL universe is that you become very attached to the characters and therefore killing one of them will stir your emotions. I will be pissed if they kill Barney, but if Kleiner or Alyx's dad (forget his name ATM) die I think it would be an interesting twist and would certainly get my attention.

Hell, maybe they'll kill Lamar. I care more about that little guy than most of the characters. And after Episode 1 I seriously hope they whack Alyx, she is one annoying biotch.

Edit - now that I think about it, killing Klein could be a very interesting and important plot twist. Not only would they kill off a familiar character, but he is reponsible for much of the technology that the resistance is using. Without Klein, they would be set back many months as far as teleportation goes. And if the grav gun broke down, I'm guessing Klein would be the only guy who could fix it. It certainly would be nice to play an episode of HL without the grav gun, it's getting kind of old.

since when does killing of a character in a movie or game mean that they stay dead...they can bring them back in any one of numerous ways if they really want to

I just want to know when the next one is coming out. It was supposed to be nice and quick, one after another, so that there wasn't so much time between games as there was between half life 1 and 2, and that was their rationalization for making them shorter. But now even the episodes are getting pushed back. This totally defeats the purpose.
