So my mom just called me all freaked out because her laptop won't boot and she's writing her dissertation in it and made me drive down to her house to check it.
I boot with a recovery live cd to check, and her hard drive has been wiped clean 🙁
Her home network is down as well so I'm pretty sure her machine was infected with conficker because it happened around 12:00.

I'm pretty sure I can recover the deleted files (I really don't think the virus bothered rewriting them) and she has a week old backup, but this is some scary shit, we hadn't been hit with a virus since sasser and she's really worried about her work.

I decided to post this in OT because more people will read and take precautions, sorry mods.

Tell that to my mother...I'm browsing the net in a spare laptop, all machines with critical data are off the network until I rule this conficker crap out.

Won't boot into any mode if the HD has been wiped out :roll:
Anyway I'm saving it to recover the deleted files in the morning.

Well Windows pushed a patch about 5~ish weeks ago that prevented Confickr entirely.

Also, by all current reports I can find so far I haven't really seen any that have Confickr wiping hard drives. It's main purpose is to auto update, evolve, and do the master's bidding, if it kills it's host then the virus cannot perform it's purpose or it's "prime directive" (because I never get to use that term).

Four evolutions, a, b, c, d. It wouldn't just kill itself.

Plus many speculate it's a for-profit botnet being constructed. Botnets are the opposite of killing their hosts.
 
I kind of made my thread on the fly, should've researched my stuff better, also I didn't think it was funny after I posted but went along with it anyway 😉
