Been looking around the web and came about some interesting stuff... (yea im a noobie)

The next gen Wii is gonna be, Wii HD? Not much info here, but the word is the new Wii will have the same power as the 360 and PS3.

Next gen for 360 is project natal? A 360 with motion sensors like for the wii? No upgraded graphics?

And I haven't seen a peep about PS4.

Anyone wanna chime in on their thoughts/opinions? With an upgraded wii and project natal being the 'next' gen console for 360 is fairly disappointing. Wii HD and project natal are not too far off into the horizon. But no DX11 support? :(

no the next gen for wii is not wii hd, that is strictly rumors i believe.

no the next gen for 360 is not project natal, that is simply an addon to the current 360.

you havent seen a peep about ps4 because there is no ps4 announced yet.

Don't expect much news on the next Playstation or Xbox beyond conjectures because they likely won't be released until 2012. Both MS and Sony are trying to extend this generation out as far as possible.

I hope next gen means all games will be 1080p and 60fps. I also think that next gen will look super amazing in screen shots but the animations will still look almost the same as this gen. Animation is the next big thing that needs to improve.

I don't think that's ganna happen at all with 1080p/60. That'll require so much horsepower unless the textures are crappy but since the new consoles aren't supposed to come out until 2012 maybe then cus it'll provide ample time for tech to catch up but probably by then we'll have 1440p or higher. Many console games today aren't even 720p/60.

Sony has said that it plans a 10 year run for the PS3. Microsoft also has said they have no plans on releasing a new console anytime soon. 2012 seems the most likely time for the successors but it could even go later.

10 year cycle could just mean they'll continue releasing stuff and supporting it for 10 years...like the PS2. Hopefully the PS4 comes sooner than 2016. :\

Considering how much of a leap the PS3 and 360 were over their predecessors, it's entirely plausible that we'll see 1080p60 become something of a standard. Might some games choose to run below it? Sure. But the vast majority of games will be running at 1080p30 or 1080p60, just like the vast majority of PS3 and 360 games are 720p30 or 720p60.

I agree, and with more and more AAA titles using motion capture for animations, I think we'll see this. Games like Gears of War and Call of Duty (4 and Modern Warfare 2) have butter-like animations. I think those titles used mc for much of the animation.

I actually find myself quite content with the current state of graphics. I'm not quite sure what I expect from the next generation of consoles. I'd like to see far higher reliability, smaller footprint, less noise, but that's about it.

I don't think improving the graphics is a substantial chore: the 360 has a fossil for a graphics card and only 512MB of RAM, and look what it can crank out! Imagine 2GB of RAM and a DX11 card!

This is the problem with rumors, they can be so misleading.

Wii HD is certainly a possibility, but nothing has been announced by Nintendo. Infact, I think they've basically denied that it exists (which doesnt mean anything and is just good business). But there are those that disagree with Nintendo like Michael Pachter, who says it will be out by the end of this year, or John Davison, who says he knows someone who's actually seen it. Who knows, right? I think people (including me) are leaning towards the possibility that we'll see something like/similar to a Wii HD eventually because Nintendo is sort of heading down this iterative hardware upgrade path--like the release of the DSi. It's not really a successor, but it's an upgrade to an exisiting platform.

Natal is interesting, in my opinion, because it shows that MS is going to stick with the 360 for at least another few years, and that's because it's a perihperal--not a new console (just so you understand). I suppose you could get away with calling it "motion controls", but I dont know if I agree with that. I would say its more like a gesture based system. But that's neither here nor there--Natal isnt a new console.

The PS4 is so far off, in my opinion, that you might as well wipe it's exsistance from your mind. Sony will most likely stick with the PS3 for a long long time. It cost an incredible amount of money to R&D, produce, market and build. I think, last we heard, Sony is still losing money on the actual sales of the console.

I actually am very very confortable with where we are, as gamers, right now. I love what each console has to offer (mostly) and when I play games like Assassin's Creed 2 or Uncharted 2, I think...man, I dont know if I'm ready to leave this generation of consoles.

We're gaming in great times! :)

If nothing else, we are just now starting to see developers really be able to maneuver around with the Xbox 360 and PS3 and come out with truly impressive looking and well developed games. It would be a shame for another generation of consoles to hit this year or next when they are just now starting to reach the full potential of the systems.

Ricochet – a Breakout-like game in which the entire body is used to bounce balls at blocks.
Paint Party – where the player can make throwing motions to splash or draw with paint onto a wall. He/she can choose colors using speech recognition, and can pose to make stencils.
Milo and Kate – a full game in development by Lionhead Studios[30] in which the player interacts with a young child (Milo or Milly, selected by the user at the start) and his/her dog Kate by performing real-life actions. Interaction was demonstrated only with Milo at this event.[31]

Sounds like the typical bullsh*t tech demo games that are crap.

Also driving with an invisible steering wheel is stupid, your arms would get tired in no time. This is perfect for a fighting game or some sports games. Combat game with guns, too.

The driving sounds the worst to me--no tactile feed back in a game like that just doesnt sound appealing at all.

But those games look like...Soccer mom Wii games right? :)

Yep, a solid 60fps for all games will never happen in the future for the same reason it doesn't happen for all games now. All consoles are perfectly capable of it already(playing a game at an unwavering 60fps), but developers would rather cram in more visuals and sacrifice frame rate to do it. They won't stop doing that in the future either. More hardware just means more horsepower, but the performance demands from the games will increase to negate the benefit when it comes to fps. You'll just end up with better looking but not necessarily faster running games.
