Next 13" Macbook Pro Refresh

I am in the market for a new laptop, and I am interested in purchasing my first Apple computer. A long time PC user here, but I am interested in getting to know the OS.

I am thinking of getting a 13" Macbook Pro, but it seems like there will be some big changes in next refresh, such as Arrendale and new nVidia chipset and GPU, probably based on G200M.

I am thinking next refresh will be around Feb 2010, which is about 5 months from now. Just not sure whether to wait or get one now.

If you can wait, I would. If its not a big upgrade, the added benefit is that the last gen (still very capable and fast) drops in price immediately (usually on the order of $100-200) at places like Amazon.

It is the same advice over and over again. If you need it now, buy it now. If you can wait, wait. It is guaranteed that something better is coming, that is just a fact of technology. The question is, how long can you wait?

Bingo. Everyone will tell you to wait because something new is coming out. Just after it comes out though you'll have people telling you to wait to see if there are any problems with the laptops. A little while after that they'll tell you to wait for the education discount. After that you'll only be a few months from the next update.

I would say Arrandale is a pretty big deal. Couple that with at least 40% improvement in the GPU from 65nm to 40nm process shrink, and you've got a winner. I am definitely waiting and just pushing my original MacBook until the Arrandale MBP comes out.

Personally, I'm waiting until the 13" MBP has either an ExpressCard slot or an esata port. I'm a big fan of Time Machine, but my first experience with it was on a hackintosh with an external esata drive. That's how it SHOULD work, it's brutal over USB. I use FileVault and this machine has two user accounts, so my backups are always fairly large, unfortunately.

i wanted to upgrade to the mbp 15" as soon as they got the matte screen option ($50 damn you apple), but i thought about it and realized that ill be paying for the same technology (and an SD card only slot, and i use my expresscard slot for multiple cards). i would rather have ion2 + nehalem than ion + core 2.

i think you should hold off because you just missed out on the free printer/ipod deal. even though the mbp lineup got refreshed 2 months ago, its almost coming into its midlife cycle, so just a few more months to go! 🙂

Unless you need a computer right now I would wait. Like aphex mentioned, even if the new refresh offers nothing different, it still always induces a price drop on the previous generation stuff. Also a small speedbump is usually expected at each refresh.

This.

Seriously, if you want one just buy it. Otherwise you'll be waiting forever.

5 months is a long time and I'd rather be able to use the laptop for 5 months.
