I just sent a message to a newsgroup and it errored. Called my ISP (Sonic.net), sending them the error message. The guy talks to his supervisor and comes back and says they have stopped supporting their newsgroup server system, "sorry." Says I can look into alternative newsgroup access. I've done that in the past. What works now? I have my email/newsgroup client (old version of Forte Agent) subscribed to many newsgroups, which I visit occasionally. Would like to continue to do so... TIA for facts/info/suggestions/caveats/etc.!

Giganews, maybe?

Also, ISP now has you on porn/pirate watch.

If you are using it to do the yo-ho yo-ho! a blah-blah life for me thing, they you might want to look into a proxy and just use torrents instead. There are so many fake and infected postings on Usenet today that some groups are almost impossible to use without a ton of searching to find a single legit posting.

Proxies reduce your torrent download speeds, but the comment section quickly weed out the fake or infected posts, so you save time on searching.

Aarrrrrg, at least that's what I heard from a real life pirate.

My interest in newsgroups has nothing to do with porn and piracy. Well, I did in the distant past a bit, TBH, but not for many years P&P. The trouble I had today was when I tried posting to:

alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent

It supports my email/newsgroup client application, Agent. I've been having a problem with email filters not working. In the past I've gotten very expert support in that newsgroup for the program which I've used for upwards of a decade, Agent 1.932.

Yes, I've noticed that a lot of newsgroups have been inundated by weird posts, spam, crazy shit for several years. I don't hang out in newsgroups at all now, visit them occasionally. I still get support for some things, including the database program that I use constantly to manage my own information, Visual Foxpro:

microsoft.public.fox.programmer.exchange <--- Still seems pretty impervious to intrusion by spam, possibly it's moderated, maybe by Microsoft. Several famous world class Foxpro programmers "hang out" there regularly.

Google Groups, as mentioned above.

But if you insist on using a client, I'm sure you'll find some free text only (no binaries) servers out there.
