anyone familiar with newsgroups? What is the server that most people use?

Most people use their ISP's server, or they buy a newsgroup account from a different newsgroup provider. No, you won't find a free one that allows binaries, so don't ask.

When I used to do it a lot I used my ISP servers and they were real good.

i use my ISP newsgroup server...they provide pretty well for me.. 😀

Easynews! The rate is cheap ($10/month), they don't throttle downloads, have superb retention rates, high uptimes, and a generous data cap. Been with them over a year and completely satisfied; before that, I was jumping ship around so many other providers since they were all crap.

http://news.cis.dfn.de/ - Best free one I've seen. However, after registration, you have to wait for a staff member to grant you access. Keep in mind that this helps weed out the trouble makers and spammers. Besides, It's FREE.
