Newservers : download speed ???

on a 4 mb/s cable connection ?

ISP provider suddenlink tech says not aware of any cap on download speed via newsgrps...

but I'm seeing 500 kb/s tops

Talked to usenetserver.com tech who said my connection to their server(s) should max out my connection. He suggested a couple of things like going to port 8000 and forcing ip path but that didn't help.

I'm using Grabit - could it be a limitation of this particular newsreader ?

Anybody with genuine knowledge of this ???

Are you confusing bits and bytes? If so, your connection is probably maxed out already.

If not, try increasing the number of connections used by grabit.

If that doesn't work, your ISP may be throttling your connection and not saying anything. Try a different port or encrypt your connections.

Looks like your connection is already being maxed out (if 500kb is really 500KB) A 4mb cable connection would max out at about 500KB

hmmmm, then my math must be fuzzy and i am indeed mixing kbps and kbytes/sec

so those of you who DL from newservers, you see a typical download time of ~ 2.5 hrs for a 4.4 gigabyte file ???

I use GigaNews with my 6mbit dsl line and I max out at 630k/sec. I use 10 connections concurrently and with a better connection it would go much faster. I also use Newsleecher as my download program. I would highly recommend both if you want to avoid using torrents. 500 seems pretty good for a 4mbit connection.
