I mostly use Apple News, and some of the best stuff it feeds me are from The Atlantic and the Guardian. The Guardian is an enigma to me - I remember it as a totally left wing sort of fake news rag from many years ago, but lately their articles seem spot on - just slightly left of center and as far as I know, pretty factual and the Opinion pieces spot on. The NYT paywall repelled me. The Conversation is also a great free site. I am quite happy that the Atlantic gives a lot of free articles before you hit a paywall.

I wonder if Apple News is algorithmic the same way that Facebook feeds are, trying to put me into an echo chamber? It does occasionally serve up some Fox "News" and I go in with as open a mind as I can muster, but usually run out screaming a few seconds later!

As I was redirected in to the Guardian site today for some great articles on the DNC, I am still wondering why I used to deride The Guardian when people quoted and linked it, but now it seems spot on to me. I guess they successfully navigated to center left from the far left and increased their believability in the process, and I would love to see a book or article on how and why.

A similar “really?” source is Al Jazeera. Seems amazing that it can be anything close to objective. Although I have had near zero experience with it.

Eh. The Guardian has never been particularly far to the left. It's definitely central, fairly liberal though.
Always challenges the party in power regardless of if it's Labour or Tories.
They are pretty good for news, their opinion pieces and lifestyle pieces can be a bit left wing woolly hippy though if that triggers you.

Really? That seems odd, given msnbc. Aren’t they the same company? They are diversifying? Hedging, covering their bets? I’ll have to check it out tomorrow at work.

Earlier this summer I decided to pay for a year of the Guardian to support them, and for some of the paid features. I'm getting a lot of my news there today. I like their standards

It is serving me up CNN, Reuters, ABC, NBC, AP, even Vox, and the most right-wing one is WSJ. Nothing from MSN itself, so I assume it is just an aggregator like Apple News. Oops, they did manage to sneak in some Faux “News” also!

You just have to filter the crap out. Sometimes though it works as a shortcut. I also try to find the original source and post that if I can, than just having the MSN link appear.

Ground News is a platform that makes it easy to compare news sources, read between the lines of media bias and break free from algorithms.

I tried it for a month or two, earlier this year, paid. I thought it was more off than on - mostly by labeling too many things as left leaning even if it was just literally an undeniable factual truth. Maybe the algorithm got better or you'd see things differently.

That used to be about the only redeeming factor of Republicans, that they wanted to keep spending down and wanted to boost the economy. Trump OTOH just increased the deficit by borrowing money to hand to billionaires.

I think your memory is selective. Republicans say they want to keep spending down, but it’s only rhetoric. Why else does the natl debt climb so dramatically when Republicans hold the WH? They cut taxes for corps and the wealthy and increase spending. Exactly opposite of what they preach and you seem to be falling for it.

No, not falling for it now or probably ever again, but I did in the past with Reagan, and that was a huge mistake on my part. I guess my point is neither party has done very well in keeping the national debt down which theoretically is supposed to be good for the economy. I guess Clinton came the closest, but his administration had a lot of flaws too.
