I'm glad spells are being switched to dedicated, it rewards magic users more. I love the idea of being able to use two spells at once, and the variance of the spell depending on how long you click/hold the button. Cool stuff! Can't wait for the community to mod it all to even better heights.

What I'm hoping is they don't take out spellmaking. Some of the spell stuff they described, using a ward and a fireball spell already exists. Cast shield then switch to fireball.

Even if you can't combine spells, magicka students will have no shortage of options, with over 85 spells divided into five schools of magic....

So they will have pre-set spell combos?

So you make a combo of weakness, fireball, lightning and assign that to a key. And when in combat you press that key and your guy casts them one after the other.

They already have it in Oblivion with individual spells that can have up to 8 effects. But I agree making a new spell for everything you want eventually gets to be a hassle. And the game chugs when your spell list gets too huge.

This is a no-brainer pre-order for me. Oblivion had the overall hours:dollar ratio better than 99.99% of the games out there. Barring Diablo/Star Control 2/X-com

I hadnt thought about that. Even though many things pissed me off I still put hundreds of hours into it.

They really just called Elder Scrolls games action RPGs? Way too much dialogue to be an action RPG. And the first person perspective doesn't help either.

Just because there's a lot of dialogue and story doesn't mean an RPG can't be a good action game too. I like what they stated about combat and hopefully they can deliver. Talk and end product are sometimes very far apart however.

Ummm, actually the first person perspective does indeed help nudge it into an action RPG.

You may be thinking of Diablo and clones, which are not RPG's at all. They are hack'n'slash or action or adventure games. And because developers are ignorant fools they often call them RPG's.
Though I do agree that in the Elder Scrolls games you spend an awful lot of time doing everything else but fight. Maybe number five will be a true action RPG. They've already left pure RPG behind a long time ago.

Oblivion specifically made the jump to a lot more action-based RPG, although Morrowind still had action. Skyrim looks like it is pushing more and more towards action and less towards RPG. Let us hope they don't completely forget RPG ;)

Also, text?

Oblivion had little or no text. Most dialogue was 3 sentences.

I will have copies for the PS3 and PC on pre-order, or my girlfriend will murder me in my sleep the next day.

the changes sound nice, but i'll wait to see them in action. The leveling system needs to be fixed badly. Oblivion wasnt too bad because a leveling mod came out soon after release. I love my stats and skills going up based on me using them. Not because i reach an arbitrary number of experience points allowing me to level up and place my points in areas i didnt use to get there.

Uh, are you sure that you're talking about Oblivion? Either you're confused or you just wrote it backwards because it's pretty much the exact opposite of the way you said it
