R9-290 & R9-290X? Dual GPU on the 290X?
Edit- Ok the more I think about it I don't think the X stands for dual GPU so not sure what it stands for. :)

I'm looking forward to the R2-D2.

I really hate the naming schemes tech companies come up with.

It is like AMD is just licensing old Nvidia names and reusing them. We had the 5800 series and now the 260? =( I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

i guess amd was coming back to the 9x00 numbers and deciding 9700 being the new low end part would be confusing (no one gave a crap about the radeon 8500 and the radeon 7200 and 7500 were a late renaming effort of the original radeon chip)

Rather than have 7950 then 7970...the just dropped the x0 and just left it at X for the faster version I imagine.

X for Extreme.

It used to be XT, PE etc to denote the high end variant, running faster or more shaders.

A new naming scheme is needed, they are returning to the 9000 series which was already used a long time ago.

GCN is also a massive departure from their VLIW architecture they have had for years, its about time it got a new naming scheme.

If they can reproduce the performance of the 9800XT back in the day in today's equivalent...they will be on to something.

Uhm, aren't these just the names for the chips? These are not names for the cards. The cards will be 9000 series. The Rxxx has always been the model of the chip. Brings me back to the days of the R350. Loved that card (9800 Pro).

No, these are card model numbers. Modern chips are not named R(anything), they get named after islands.

R7 260X (HD 9790)
R7 250 (HD 9770)
R7 240 (HD 9750)

That must be how they line up. Not sure about the convention, I guess they were running out of names.

I kind of like the naming scheme, the only exception being the X. This would be my take on it.

R9 290 (HD 9970)
R9 280 (HD 9950)
R9 270 (HD 9870)
R9 260 (HD 9850)
R7 250 (HD 9790)
R7 240 (HD 9770)
R7 230 (HD 9750)

Would have made it a little easier imo, of course they are probably not wanting to sound like an older Nvidia cards. But I am just not digging the X for some reason....Not sure if we will see a another dual gpu 28nm card from AMD. If the stream processor count is anything like they are saying it is and clock per clock performance hasn't been improved, I don't think we will see a huge gain in performance. More than likely the Hawaii XT card may position itself between the GTX 780 and Titan.

Because of the new leak I had to update the chart from yesterday. Finally it all makes sense. The Radeon R9 290 will be a successor to dual-gpu Radeon HD 7990, just as we thought earlier

With the new update to the list I'm a little skeptical of the line-up. It would imply that the the new 9970 is three tiers above the current 7970Ghz. Seems too awesome to be true.

You know just thinking about the GPU-Z from TPU, I'm now thinking the 290 might not be a dual GPU (like VC says) since there is an X and non X? I think these could turn out be single GPU cards?
