Thanks to a certain company I work for I just talked the other day to Carmack and God his new project for Id is gonna be real cool. All I can say is that the game engine is "kinda 75% doom3" with a whole lot of new things. No game will look as good when this yet untitled game comes out by possibly december 2005/jan06.
You guys wouldn't believe that how the new lighting tecs and shadow effects look!!!!!!!
John is really working hard to get that SW light transparency effect that ILM used on yoda.
I would really like to tell you guys more "but a contract is a contract"
I must remember patience is a virtue.

If its a new project, we wont see if for about 4 to 5 years. Not while Carmack is working on his rockets.

He told me the same thing. He also mentioned that it runs best on a Volari Duo and that Postal 2 is the best FPS he's ever played. He then offered me a ride on his rocket. I wasn't exactly sure what he meant, so I left.

Half-Life was scripted, but it was much better scripted than Doom III...

Personally, I didn't really feel Doom III was that jaw dropping as much as the pics from the next Unreal Engine.

Doom3 was boring, but maybe other games with the same engine will be great.

Actually, I remember Carmack saying the next id game would take much less time to develop. I can see them wanting to turn out a quicker one based on the work he did with Doom 3, rather than starting another multi-year cycle.

Well I work for the company that most of you hate (yeah that one) And being a PR I don't know much of that tech talk you guys babble about. Ah!!! NO I don't want to impress anybody. I known John for about 7 years. He's quite a nice guy and we talk very little of my and his work matter of fact. But I created this topic just to let you tech fans know a bit what is been planed. Well he says he's working now on that transparency effect that light creates when it hits tissue. It must have some tech name but I forgot it.

Ps: there were some Gamesomething guys meeting him after I left so I would bet the news will come out on the net within days or hours if not already. I just wanted to keep you in the loop. Remember next year new Id game. Maybe that should have been the topic "new ID game"

End of 2005 early 2006.... probably get delayed a bit.

But wait... its 75% Doom 3

Unreal Engine 3 comes out early 2006 with a bit of a delay.

Umm i think ill bet on the UE3 being a more technological and better engine dont u.

So we should expect AMAZING lighting and shadows...

Anyting else he wants to improve, like texture detail and all that stuff...

Everyone here has seen the UE3 pics and video, and honestly can anyone say an engine based on 75% of the Doom 3 engine will be able to beat that? Maybe, Maybe not, they havent showed us anything yet, but i can still see major improvements for UE3.

Also the Doom 3 game for the Xbox.... Can someone tell me how they ported and OGL engine onto a DX engine, and is this the reason why it looks ugly?

Uh Doom 3is very close to reality graphics wise. It has a few issues. Flesh as pointed out.
One thing Doom 3 has over every other game is metal. Doom 3 metal looks like real metal. Metal of every color. Doom 3 is the only game that makes metal look like metal.
That in and of itself is quite an advancement. Take what doom 3 has already going great which is multi light shadows and lighting on surfaces and add 25% more to it sounds like it'll bring us one more step close to total photo realism.

I don't know if I'd bet on a game using UE3 to be out very early in 2006. From what I've seen so far they're still working hard on getting the engine made and then they'll have to create the content of the game. While they could easily (and probably will) just take the UT stuff and throw it onto the new engine, I'm thinking it'll be 2nd quarter of 06 before we see a game released using it.

Yes the UE3 is superior to Doom 3, but if you think about it, it should be. Carmack did most of the D3 engine himself, while a team of talented people are working on UE3, and also Carmack started much earlier, so what was capable hardware wise was a lot less.

Really, everybody wins, as there'll be more great engines for less talented developers to use and focus on making great content. Far Cry, HL2/Source, Doom3, and the UE3 are all great, and hopefully will make better games eaiser to create. More competition is only a good thing.
