Ever notice how some pedestrians hold the 'walk' button down....or press it over and over and over again, as if the first press didn't register? Or maybe they think that when they press the button, all traffic should immediately come to a screeching halt, so they can cross?

My idea: have the crosswalk button issue a high-voltage shock if the button is held for more than 3 seconds, or pressed more than twice in 10 seconds :evil:

That is all. You may now resume your usual high-brow ATOT fare.
 
It's like when pushing the elevator button more then once.

It helps since it tells the gremlins more people need it so they speed it up for you. 😉
 
There was a thread on this some time ago.
It's been known for a while that those things never actually did anything. I used to press them all the time in NYC as a kid, though.

You'll know when they've arrived, as they tend to keep their fingers on the doorbell button until someone answers the door.

As a ATOT regular for the past three years, if there's one thing I've learned, it's that if you're craving White Castle, posting here just don't cut it. In fact, just thinking about those tender little White Castle burgers with those little, itty-bitty grilled onions that just explode in your mouth like flavor crystals everytime you bite into one... just makes me want to burn this mothefucker down. And in PA.

A lot of traffic lights, in addition to having a timer, also have inductive sensors under the pavement to detect when a car is present. Otherwise the light may not cycle for a very long time, if ever. I would guess that the button for pedestrians simply does the same thing as the sensor - it sends a signal to the traffic lights that it needs to cycle to allow a "vehicle" through the appropriate direction such that the pedestrian can cross.

But this of course will not be instantaneous, as the light will need to go through its normal timed cycle before it can grant that request, just as the presence of a car over the inductive sensors doesn't trigger the light to turn immediately.

 
That reminds me once I was on the city bus and we were at a red light so the bus driver put the bus in park ran to go press the button went back in the bus, the light turned green, and went LOL. It was one of the longer routes and it was hard for drivers to make it on time especially in blizzards and what not, so they find their ways. 😛

Here, they normally just switch the Don't Walk sign to Walk when the corresponding light goes green and holds it green longer than normal.
