I've often wondered how far I'd get doing pretty much exactly the opposite of the modern day politician. No prepared speeches by other people. Straight talk. No slick suits or makeup. Just be real and speak on real issues. One day, when I have more time in my life and I'm a bit older, I may just try to run for a local political office by doing just that. Hell, door to door in jeans to discuss issues. Is anyone else just completely turned off from modern politics? I'm sitting here choking down this bull$hit they're spewing so I can grab a glimmer of hope that America still is founded on integrity and blood and guts people. I wanna see these guys sweat their asses off laying bricks. I want to see them on the front lines in Iraq, even for a short time. Not sitting in a big office that my hard earned dollars paid for feeding me line after line of bull$hit. That goes for both sides.

In all seriousness...I don't think any politician should use Springsteen as music during a campaign. Reagan did it with "Born In the USA" and Kerry's doing it now. Springsteen doesn't sing about how great America is. He sings abut how America lets down those who need help the most.

And I'm sure The Boss himself wouldn't approve of such use of his music.

An older gentleman just rang my doorbell tonight. He's running for my township's Board of Trustees. He said, "Well, I sure hope you'll vote for me, but I really just want to get you out to the primary polls in August, and definitely in November."

He won my vote. I like local politics and I'd like to get involved in it some day. The guy just said what he needed to say with no crappy promises.

I've often wondered the same thing, but I think that's an unattainable ideal. I've taken up the position that all politicians are liars and crooks, because if they were honest they would have honest jobs, and wouldn't be politicians.

Maybe that's Kerry's point?

I watched about 4 minutes of it last night or the night before (actually I listened to it). I could have told you everything they were going to say before they said it. It was all just pandering to mindless people. I wonder if there is a political speech generator out there somewhere that these people use. Here's how it goes:

You choose whether you are the incumbant or the opposition.

Incumbant: Everything is going great. We had some tough times, but we are still here. I know I made all sorts of crazy promises that I haven't been able to keep such as [Insert promise] but I have set things in motion and if elected again, I will keep that promise. I promise

Opposition: Everything in this world sucks. We are heading to hell in a handbasket and the only thing that will stop it is me. I will lower taxes, provide healthcare to everyone, increase funding for education and basically everything else that the last guy who won promised. Everything is wrong and will get worse unless I am elected.

Of course there would be pauses in there for applause and whatnot which would make it seem longer, but here it is.

Kerry's "I will restore trust and credibility to the White House" comment reminded me a lot of Bush's nomination acceptance speech back in 2000. I think that we all know how well THAT turned out :(

I just don't think the founders would have ever considered doing what's being done today in attempting to lead or leading this country. It's so derisive and, forgive me for saying it, but it's rather....Hitlerish anymore. The average person I try to talk with issues on today is pretty clueless. I read the newspaper every chance I get. I read a smattering of news sources on the internet to get a broad view of the issues. I don't think that happens anymore. Most Americans seem content to hear news bites and read headlines and draw their own conclusions. It's sad really. Oh well, enough ranting from me tonite.

when the crowd chants "kerry. kerry. kerry..." it sounds like "jerry. jerry. jerry." ala the springer show.

Also anyone notice the way he uses his hands wit the thumb pointing up, like Clinton. Sometimes he forgets when to use that gesture.

I noticed that. It's said to be a less threatening gesture than a closed fist, so you see a lot of politicians doing it.

I say let your gestures be natural. It's OK to be a *little* bit human when campaigning...just not Howard Dean levels of humanity. ;)
