News article states Britain is to purchase 150 F-35 Fighter planes. Link inside.

To replace the (very) old Harrier jump jet, as cool as that was (VTOL) and to make sure we have other options other than that silly Eurofighter we joined up for.

I'm confused as to why we need 150 new fighters.

Me too, it seems a bit excessive. They might plan on purchasing these new aircrafts over the course of ten years instead of buying them all in one big hit. Maybe, I don?t know.

Personally, I?d rather spend £10Billion on preventative measures against illegal immigrants!!

Great time for them buy them with the fall of the dollar. They saved 40 percent from the dollars worth 6 years ago.

I am quite sure it will be over the course of 5-10 years. Nothing in the defense industry moves fast enough to just ship 150 JSFs at once 😛

A buy 1 get 1 free type of deal.

😀

Those 150 F-35s could probably obliterate the combined air forces of the rest of Western Europe should the need arise. Stealth>non-stealth.

Gotta protect the good old British Pound somehow. 😛

oh believe me your uk military has been underfunded for a long time.
and you've paid for it in lives.. like in the falklands where it was only a matter of lucky timing that you had any aircraft carriers left at all, and they were insufficient in size and number tokeep enough air cover around to prevent disasters.

you need a decent number of anything since there will always be a certain % in maintenance and they aren't all in a single place.

News Article. Cool pics, too.

Sounds good to me. 😀

isnt the F-35 Joint Strike Fighters a US plane? (joint as in the 4 US military branches)

thought the UK had their own fighter research ministry?
a plane's a plane either way, it does what it needs to do. besides it wasn't developed by the US government or anything...it was lockheed's project to begin with.

Apparently, the UK paid about 10% of the development cost.
