This is weird... I had a cat5e cable between my PC in my jack and it was getting me gigabit speed. I decided to make a new one using cat6. It's only getting me 100mbps, like, it actually connects at that speed. What's up with that? I checked both ends and they look 100%. Wires are reaching all the way to the end and all.

Should I just not bother making my own cables and use factory made ones instead?

Is there a certain resistance that a cat6 cable needs to be under for it to work properly? I get about 0-1 ohm (think my multimeter just rounds it) from end to end on all 8 wires (tested individually)

Conventional wisdom around here seems to be "Don't make your own patch cords because you'll always fuck them up." I'm not sure how true that is or isn't, however monoprice sells them for so cheap I never bothered to try.

Yeah think next time I do a monoprice order I'll just buy a bunch. Not worth doing an order just for that though. (over 100 bucks of shipping to here).

SO, what pinout / color order did you use?

Did you keep the exposed pair to 3/8" or less?
Solid cable, or stranded?
Did you use Cat6 rated connectors?

There has to be a place similar to monoprice in Canada, no? I mean monoprice cables are really good, but for $100 shipping? There has to be a place that has half decent cables up there...

I used A on both ends.

I did not consider the rating of the connectors though... so they do have ones made for cat6 then right? That may be my problem. This is a batch of connectors that I've had for a very long time and chances are they're made for cat5.

As for cables there is tigerdirect and NCIX but they're WAY more expensive then monoprice. Sucks that everything is like 5 times the price here.

IIRC, most cat6 connectors space out the wire ends more than old cat5(e) connectors, with alternate vertical positioning. Still, it seems unlikely that the connectors could have such a drastic negative affect, if you correctly ordered the wires and crimped well.

Looks to me like a 568A cable. Is this cable going directly from the router/switch to your pc, or do you plug into a jack?

You probably didn't get the right pressure on the crimp, what crimper are you using?

But IMO I wouldn't even bother, just buy patch cables and know that they will work.

It's going to a jack, the jack works fine at 1gbps with a cat5e cable I made a while back. I did wire the jack too though. I'm using this crimper. (not sure of brand, bought it long time ago and it does not say anything on it).
