I just built a new pc, all the parts were ordered through Newegg.

Amd Athlon 64 3500+ CPU am2, 1gig corsair dd2 value ram, evga geforce 7600GT, MSI K9N Neo-F Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 550 MCP ATX AMD Motherboard, sata 250 gig hd ws

and this PSU:

The pc has been running great all day yesterday, played olbivion and dark of camelot for hours, pretty much all day and no problems. Today I turned the pc on left it idle while I was doing soething on my laptop and the PC just shut off. I was able to turn it back on with no problems but I know this is mostly a PSU problem... any ideas?

I don't know the source of your problem, but here are some possibillities:

a) Make extra certain the cpu cooler is properly mounted. I once had an experience where tiny misalignment of the cpu cooler was causing shutdowns because the cpu was overheating. Use good thermal paste to mount it, or if the cpu and cooler came together in a boxed set with an insulation pad, make sure you used the pad between the cpu & the cooler. Double check that your cpu cooler is properly clamped on.

b) Maybe too late now, but in my humble opinion you ought to have bought a better power supply. I suspect you are underpowered. If you can exchange that budget psu for a better one, then I would do that.

I looked on MSI's website for you, & found this discussion about PSU's that some MSI owners recommend.

Also, AMD has suggested PSU's:
