Newly built compooper won't even start!

Guys-
Just put together my first build, and all I get is a black screen out of my monitor. I am running a Athlon 2500+ on a A7N8X Deluxe mobo. All I have connected is my 2 IDE CD/DVD drives and my SATA HD. I have no idea what to do now!

Thanks

If that's all you have connected, then you forgot your video card! No wonder you only have a black screen... 😛 j/k

We need more information on your system, plus exactly what happens when you push the "Power On" button? Nothing? Fans spin, hard drives wind up, no video signal at all? Fire?

Try reseating all components. I'd start with the video card, then try the memory, then the cpu/heatsink/fan. You did make sure the Heatsink is seated properly, right?

I don't suppose you can get ahold of another computer or monitor so you can swap working components?

when I power up, the fans spin, my CD drives run, the power light and IDE light light up, but nothing happens. I am going to try to re-seat all the components

Thanks!

Looks like a problem between the chair and keyboard 😀

Did you plug the PC Speaker in? If not then plugin in and listen to the beep codes.

I tried to re-seat again, and all I get is a beep when I turn it off. Outside of that, it doesn't beep at all. Also, there is no out to my monitor. However, the led on the mobo (asus a7n8x) lights green, and the "incorrect AGP" light is not lit. I really do not know what to do!

Thanks!

no out to your monitor? what does that mean?

1) Try the monitor on another system.
2) Try a different video card.
3) Try a PCI video card.

Ok. . .I re-seated the video card. When I start it up, the fans run, but I am not really sure if the HD is running or not (it is SATA). It doesn't beep at all, and if I connect a monitor, the green light on the monitor just flashes (I have a syncmaster 191T). Argh! Please let me know if you guys have any suggestions!

Thanks,
Ed

The monitor works fine on my other computer, so I am assuming that it is ok. Unfortunately, I do not have another video card. . .should I go buy a cheap one? Could it be a deeper problem with the mobo or cpu? I really have no idea of where to go from here.

Thanks!

Don't the Asus boards have some kind of post thing that tells you what's going on, possibly through a voice system etc?

Try to switch componenets with other PCs as much as possible to eliminate variables. IE sticking another sock A CPU under that heatsink, etc.

If the board has a jumper, underclock by setting the bus to 100 or 133, and if it's in a case, remove the stuff from it and set it up on a test bed.

I don't have any of the components (another cpu, test bed, etc). . .I am not sure what exactly I can do without them. Why remove things from the case? Can that change things?

Thanks,
Ed

Yes, I have one, and by default, there is sound telling you the problem, but through the speaker plug in the back for external speakers, not the internal speaker. Make sure that is hooked up and it should tell you more. (this is for the A7N8X deluxe, and my A7V333 also has it, not as good, not sure about other mobos)

WOW! That's cool! Would have save me a lot of trouble with my first build...

As for removing the mobo from the case and placing it on the antistatic baggie to make a test bag, this can eliminate case grounding as a variable, but don't do this until you've tried other things, as obviously, your board does start, and the fans do spin.

Ok. . .I am going to work the speaker out to see if it will tell me anything. I thought it would only beep through the PC speaker. . .hopefully that helps.

Thanks!

I am getting a "system failed memory test" message. . .I am using corsair value select pc 3200 ram.

That voice system is awesome, but whoever did the voiceovers is entirely too annoying!!

Thanks for all your help guys!!

Question, one or two sticks ? And are you at bios default settings ? Try and reset bios with a jumper (can't remember if there is one) or remove the battery. If you are running it at agressive timings (2-2-2-7 or something) change to 2.5-3-3-8 (or something) and try again. You ram may be OK, just not running at rated value.

this isn't entirely related, but i'll say it anyway. when i put together my box, (p42.53ghz, 512pc2700), i had a funny problem, it sped through the bios and everything fast as hell, and without an os on the hard drive, i just had a black, but lit, screen. just wanted to tell you that as a preliminary thing to avoid any other possible problems. i was freaking out when i didn't see anything at first, then i started mashing the f1 key to get into the bios before i even powered it and i was in the bios just fine and new everything was hunky-doory.
