Newest research on Artificial Sweeteners.

Article in my local paper

BAD news for diet soda fans. A recent study, published last year by Italy's Ramazzini Foundation, has concluded the worst:

"Our study shows that APM (aspartame) is a multipotential carcinogenic compound whose carcinogenic effects are evident even at a daily dose of 20 mg/kg bw, much less than the current ADI [acceptable daily intake] for humans in Europe (40 mg/kg body weight) and in the United States (50 mg/kg bw)."

The Ramazzini Foundation study claims APM causes brain tumors in rats, affirming that artificial sweetener -- commonly known as Equal or NutraSweet -- deserves a spot alongside such known cancer-causing sugar substitutes as saccharin (banned in Canada, but still around in the U.S.) and cyclamate (banned in the U.S., but still around in Canada). In Mexico, food and drink containing APM comes with ominous warning labelling; in New Mexico, Democratic State Senator Jerry Ortiz y Pino has introduced a bill that would see the stuff banned.

There is more in both articles, but this is the most important part imo.

So...the best solution is to stick to natural sweeteners, in manageable and restrained amounts? Gee, what a concept!

some people have known about this for at least a few years however alot of people are simply ignorant of all the research.

Thanks for the information anyway OP

Newsflash, we're not RATS.

All negatives of artificial sweeteners have only been concluded in animals. If that were conclusive, then eating chocolates would kill us since it's been shown to be harmful in dogs.

Okay, after further reading I can safely conclude that this article is completey bunk:

During the 1991 Gulf War, soft drink manufacturers sent huge quantities of diet soda, which sat on pallets in the blazing Saudi sun before they were cooled. The latest theory on so-called Gulf War Syndrome is that the soldiers -- guzzling cola laced with a toxic triple-whammy of methanol, formaldehyde and diketopiperazine -- are suffering the after-effects of aspartame poisoning.

Carcinogens are different from poisons. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs, not to humans. Carcinogens may cause cancer in any mammal.

bad "news" ?

Its a very old myth that aspartame and other sweeteners cause cancer...

Just posting the newest research on it. I haven't done any research myself, or extensive reading on it so I can't really form my own opinions. Just re-posting others.

To reach the Acceptable Daily Intake for humans in the US (50mg/kg), you would need to consume:

50lb Child: 7 12-oz. containers of carbonated soft drink/day, or 32 packets of tabletop sweetener
150lb Adult: 20 12 oz. containers of carbonated soft drink/day or 97 packets of tabletop sweetener.

So the "daily dose of 20mg/kg" would be 8 12 oz. sodas a day to start observing carcinogenic effects... I'll keep drinking my 2-3 Diet Coke's per day.

so you are fine with a 25-37.5% chance of carcinogenic affects? 😕

They said that was when they began to see the effects. And in rats.

Nutrasweet gives me a headache. Recently I've tried gum sweetened with xylitol, a naturally occurring sugar-like substance that has less calories than sugar and is supposedly good for your teeth.

I'm sure it'll turn out to be carcinogenic or something within the next ten years too, but I don't care. It beats sugar when you're trying to lose weight...
