I was just wondering, the next computer I build, I would like everything to be sata, but I have a friend who tried to reformat his computer, and when we did so, an error came up and said their was no detectable hard drive, it was indeed SATA, but if I am going to have this problem with my newer computer, I will stay everything PATA, but ig I buy a newer XP CD, would this fix the issue?

On the install XP will begin detecting hardware. There will be a "Press F6 to install third party driver" (or something to that affect) message on the bottom of the screen. You will need to install the sata drivers from floppy to do this.

SATA drivers should've came w/ your motherboard. If not, just download it from the manufacturer and do what TonyRic said above.

If the SATA controller is onboard you shouldn't need to install a driver. But this depends on the controller.

If you are talking about an add-in PCI version you'll need to load a driver before Winbloze can see the drive(s).

Well, this is a DELL, and he doesn't have a floppy drive, or any drivers, nor do we know which ones to install, err, I was thinking about slipstreaming SP2 to my disc now, would that have any effect?

You should install from a slipstreamed SP2 disc anyway, that way you have some security while waiting for all the updates to download.

SP2 must include some SATA stuff I think, I've never had to F6 a driver in for SATA and my SATA machines have all been SP2 from the install.

If it is not an SP2 Install CD then you will have to add the drivers in manually. If you have an SP2 Install disk you have a good chance of it being fine.

I made a page to help newbies wade through the current permutations of SATA at the practical level. Sounds like more than just the newbies could stand to read it, though... ;) SATA for newbies

I have already had plenty of criticisms for the page, primarily the editorial slant and the SATA RPG :p and will be revising it, so don't bother hollering at me about it for a couple weeks.

Could've just been his motherboard didn't support SATA.

Edit: I guess he wouldn't be able to hook the drive up if it didn't support it...

depending on the winxp copy...I do not think winxp without either sp1/sp2 slipstreamed recognizes sata correctly

If you can slipstream sp2 into a winxp cd then you will not need any sata drivers and in fact I would not hit F6 and install the drivers..esp raid drivers unless you are setting up a RAID array this has caused issues for many
