Newegg's hard drive packaging

My experience with newegg.com has been overwhelmingly positive, though It has been over 1yr since I made my last purchase from them. I'd suspect that a tough economy has forced many tech related business to find cutbacks whereever they can and packaging would be one of the first places I would look.

My buddies always have a great time stomping on the mounds of bubble wrap that Newegg gives you. My friend actually packaged a DOA DVD drive in an old T-shirt and they accepted it.

I got one OEM drive between 2-plastic supporters and no peanuts in the box; that drive is still going strong (only use it as a backup).

I've had other drives I've ordered (OEM as well), and they've come bubble-wrapped and in an anti-static bag with sufficient peanuts.

Ordered a notebook HD back on Cyber Monday, it came firmly sealed in a plastic anti-static shell, and the box was filled to the brim with peanuts. No way it moved an inch during transit.

Newegg's packaging IMO is not what it used to be, everything used to be tight with nothing floating around. I guess it also matters which warehouse of the three you get your stuff from. Everything always works, but sometimes you wonder why. Or at least wrap the drives separate and then together with more wrap and surround that with peanuts so that they do not move around. If I sold a hard drive to someone I would package it better that the egg does.

For hard drives unless you buy a full box that is shipped in the package from the vendor to the egg, Zip Zoom Fly packs them better. Of course that involves ordering from ZZF.

exactly what i've noticed...the last few ordered i've had from neweegg (hard drive & motherboard) were not packaged very well...i didn't check to see which location they shipped from

Every Newegg order I've made in the last year has made me wonder what the hell they were thinking when they were packing them.

Amazon orders on the other hand, always top notch.

Last time I ordered drives from NE they were shipped in the foam drive shippers, same kind the OEM's send them to Newegg in.

I ordered some Seagate drives from Newegg and received them in decent condition.

But the packaging sucked.

Two drives are stacked upon each other with one layer of bubble wrap. The drives were not taped together well so as the package was bouncing around the two hard drives were clanking against each other.

The third hard drive was wrapped alone with one layer of bubble wrap. There were some foam peanuts, but not much, hanging out on the bottom of the package.

Anyone else experience crap packaging lately?

Ah it seems that the person that packaged my drives at NCIX has found a job at NewEgg, exact same packaging except it was sent in a packaging envelope and not a box of peanuts.

Yea seems this has been a problem for hard drives. I looked at a couple hard drives and a all of them had a lot of complaints. At first i just thought it was the drives. But then I started to see people talk about how badly the HD's were packaged. I could understand if ti was a retail until and had other protection.

But the HD i just ordered will be here today, so i hope it diod not get to beat up.

Dear Nocturnal,

Thanks for taking the time to post your informative review. We greatly apologize for any inconvenience you have experienced due to the packing of your order. I assure you I will go ahead and contact the warehouse this item came out of so this does not happen again. At your earliest convenience, please contact Alex at 800-390-1119 ( dial 25040 immediately ) or by email at alex.a.villarino@newegg.com for further assistance.

I just got a 1tb OEM WD HDD last week from them.

Was in a anti-static sealed bag that was wrapped in bubble wrap and taped up very well.

Then this was placed in the middle of the box with brown heavy paper above and below it.

As a FYI, if it's an OEM drive not in retail packaging, or a refurb drive, it could be a drop-ship directly from a 3rd party vendor. That's why different people (as shown in this thread) have diff experiences with the drive packaging.

Yea to update I got my drive in yesterday. It had a few foam peanuts and was wrapped in bubble wrap. But the bubble warp only had 1 layer on 1 long side so there was little protection. Also the drive was new in static bag (sealed) but there were still scratches on the top of the drive.

Have not installed it yet. But I can see why so many drives have DOA/Error problems from newegg. Hard drives are more fragle then other computer parts due to the moving parts inside. So the extra movement can cause problem and may be 1 of the problems with so many drives from newegg.

But still had the best price and was qucik with getting it out. If it works then no harm.

EXACTLY the same way my drives were shipped. So far my drives have been okay. I've installed all 3 and no problems YET.

Let's compare Newegg's shipping to Amazon.

I ordered the 3 Seagate drives and they came in crap packaging from Newegg.

I ordered 2 Western Digital Black 1TB drives and they came in the plastic shell which leaves the drive directly in the center without any chance of hitting another drive. PLUS, it was in a retail like box and then put into ANOTHER box. Amazing packaging and protection from Amazon.

I just got an OEM drive in, anti-static bag inside a double-wrap layer of heavy bubble wrap, and a good sized box filled with peanuts. No complaints here.

I just got an OEM drive in, anti-static bag inside a double-wrap layer of heavy bubble wrap, and a good sized box filled with paper to cushion it. It came out of the TN location. This is much better than it has been from TN. Maybe someone from Newegg is actually reading these posts and passing suggestions along. 😀

CA warehouse - always solidly packaged
TN warehouse - not so much
NJ warehouse - somewhere in between

Physical damage voids the mfg warranty. Return the drive to NewEgg while you still can! You have no warranty on that drive!

When I bought my last OEM 6400AAKS drive from Microcenter, instead of just sitting on a shelf in the anti-static bag, they were actually packaged inside cardboard boxes, with plastic clamshells holding the drive in the center of the box. If I can purchase WD OEM HDs online, that come in that same sort of retail-like packaging, then I will.

This is why I much prefer to buy retail-boxed HDs, because of the shipping protection afforded by them. I'll pay $10-15 more for the same HD, for greater peace of mind that as long as the drive isn't DOA, it will last for years.

I also ordered five Seagate 500GB 7200.11 drives from Dell, and they came all packaged in a nice container that held five drives, with nice thick foam all around each drive. Definately good packaging, I don't know if they always ship drives that way, or if I just got lucky, or if they happen to get drives in that sort of packaging when you order five of them.

The only way that I would EVER order OEM drives from NewEgg, is if I know beforehand how many drives come in an OEM carton, and I ordered the entire carton's worth.

I might purchase HDs from Amazon, given the above review of their packaging. Sounds good to me, instead of the sub-standard NewEgg packaging.

Hard drive, in a sealed anti-static bag, wrapped in 2+ inches of bubble wrap, buried in the middle of an oversized box with peanuts is substandard? 😕

Every drive I've gotten from Newegg - about a dozen last year alone - has been very securely packaged.
