Good things don't last forever, especially in good ole New york State. Well, add 8% to evertyhing, for me anyways. 🙁 I just wonder if the other online vendors will soon follow suit? NYS is really pushing residents and businesses out of the state. We have become the most taxed populous in the country.

Dear Valued Newegg Customer,

As a result of recent changes in the State of New York Tax Law requiring certain out-of-state retailers to collect and remit sales taxes to the State of New York, we regrettably inform you that Newegg.com must begin collecting applicable state and local sales tax for all orders shipped to New York addresses on or after June 1, 2008.

Qualified business customers can continue to use the Newegg.com Sales Tax Exempt Form.

We value our relationship with you and all of our New York customers. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this change in New York law and assure you that we will continue to work hard to offer you the best prices, fastest shipping and award winning customer service you deserve.

We look forward to continuing to provide you with the premier online shopping experience for all of your IT and Consumer Electronics needs.

Sincerely,

Bernard Luthi

This is going to cost Newegg plenty. Amazon is fighting NYS on this and I've read that they will probably win but it will be a long, expensive fight.

New York has been the "Spoiler State" before.

They screwed-up online pharmacy sales.

They screwed-up online tobacco sales with a CC.

They screwed-up tobacco delivery with private carriers (UPS, FedEx).

Now they're screwing with the internet sales tax.

What's next New York?

I feel your pain. Same thing happened in TN when they put a warehouse here. I don't shop there much anymore.

People owe sales or use taxes in most states for out of state purchases...
You buy an item, you pay the tax... no big deal.

Based on my understanding, what NY is trying to do is blatantly unconstitutional. Amazon will surely win, but as cparker pointed out, legal fees are going to cost them.
